A recall of Sportmix brand pet food has been expanded after more than 70 pets reportedly died after consuming the products.
Sportmix is a brand of dog and cat food manufactured by Midwestern Pet Food. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recall notice, dogs and other pets may be consuming toxins contained in Sportmix food, which can lead to illness or death. The FDA reports that aflatoxins may be present in the food.
Aflatoxins are toxins produced by a type of mold known as Aspergillus flavus. This mold may grow on grains—such as corn—that are common ingredients in pet food. When consumed by animals, aflatoxins can poison them and cause severe health problems, including death. Pet food that appears normal can still contain potentially deadly aflatoxins. The only way to know whether your Sportmix pet food may be affected is by checking whether your bag is included in the recall.
Which Sportmix Products Are Included in the Recall?
The initial Sportmix pet food recall announced in December 2020 included Sportmix Energy Plus, Sportmix Premium High Energy, and Sportmix Original Cat food products, but the recall was expanded on Jan. 11.
Under the expanded recall, all Sportmix products that contain corn, were manufactured in the brand’s Oklahoma facility, and expire on or before July 9, 2022 are now included. More than 1,000 lot codes are affected by the recall.
Consumers who have purchased Sportmix products should check the expiration date listed on the bag, as well as the ingredient list in order to determine whether their pet food is included in the recall.
The FDA recommends that consumers who have bags of food that may be contaminated by aflatoxins destroy the food so that children, pets, or wild animals cannot eat it. Pet owners may also want to sanitize pet food bowls in order to remove any traces of the potentially contaminated food.
What Are the Symptoms of Aflatoxin Poisoning?
According to the World Health Organization, aflatoxins are dangerous both to humans and to pets. Exposure to these toxins may result in the development of cancer, liver or kidney damage, immunosuppression, and increased susceptibility to other illnesses.
Although the side effects of aflatoxin poisoning may be serious, it is often difficult to diagnose the presence of these toxins in pets. Symptoms that pet owners may be able to watch out for include sluggishness or fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea. Pets may also exhibit signs of jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes or gums, which is an indication that aflatoxin poisoning may be causing liver damage.
Has Your Pet Eaten Sportmix Food?
If your pet has eaten Sportmix pet food, the FDA recommends that you take your animal to the vet to be evaluated. Even if your pet is not showing symptoms of poisoning, there may be damage to their internal organs that can only be diagnosed by a vet.
If your pet has suffered health consequences or died as a result of consuming Sportmix food, you may be able to speak with an experienced attorney about your legal options. Pet owners who have lost their pet to contaminated food products may be able to file or join a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer and recover compensation for emotional suffering and other damages. You may also be able to report pet deaths or illnesses related to the recalled food to the FDA.
