golden retriever needs Sentry flea and tick repellentA class action lawsuit states that the essential oils present in Sentry Natural Defense flea and tick repellent are toxic to pets.

The Sentry class action lawsuit was filed by Ramona Penikila who says she purchased Sentry Natural Defense for her dog in August 2019 at a Petco in California. Allegedly, she relied on the advertisement that the product was safe for pets.

Penikila claims she read and followed the instruction for use of the product, and applied it to her dog. However, she says that after application, her dog suffered serious hair loss along with abnormal skin irritation and itching. The plaintiff states that she then scrubbed the area where the product was applied, and her dog eventually returned to normal.

According to the Sentry class action lawsuit, advertising that the product is safe for pets is misleading. The Sentry essential oils class action lawsuit says that Penikila was injured because of this false advertising in a number of ways, noting that her dog suffered physical harm from the product.

Additionally, Penikila was allegedly injured because she suffered financial harm. She says that had she known that the advertisement was misleading, she would not have purchased the product.

The flea and tick repellent class action lawsuit states that the Sentry repellent contains essential oils that are not safe for cats and dogs.

Sentry repellent contains peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lemongrass oil, clove oil, and thyme oil. Penikila says that these oils can be toxic if absorbed through the skin or ingested by pets.

Allegedly, symptoms of essential oil poisoning include “irritation to the skin, vomiting, muscles tremors, and other more serious complications that can lead to organ failure and death.”

To support her claim that essential oils are poisonous to pets, Penikila cites an article posted on the Veterinary Centers of America website, which advises pet owners to never apply concentrated essential oil to their pets, because even a small amount could be harmful. The article reportedly lists essential oils present in the Sentry product as among those harmful to pets.

Allegedly, the maker of Sentry repellent knew that essential oils were poisonous to pets, noting that the company claims its products are “Veterinarian Tested.” However, the class action states that the company does not explain that essential oils are not recommended by veterinarians.

This shouldn’t be on the shelves. I had used this product in the past and it seemed fine over multiple uses. I used it again last week and three of my cats had hair loss and irritated scabby skin where it was applied on the back of the neck. So I started researching and finding more severe cases. I’m glad I found this out before something worse happened. I’m sorry to those of you that lost pets from bad products or are undergoing organ failures. It’s absolutely horrible that there are still so many products on the shelves that are harmful. With what we know why aren’t these taken off the shelves? It sickens me actually. You walk into the pet store and right there is harmful zodiac, hartz, and now sentry can be lumped in too. Like how they sell pine bedding for rabbits when it’s toxic. These companies need to be shut down or restructured. And the pet stores need to take a stand and say no to these products. I’ve always been extremely cautious and something I trusted as safe hurt my pets. Fix your damn formulas or shut yourself down if you’re that incompetent.

This product works great for repelling ticks! I would like it to stay on the market for people who know how to use it and need it for it’s great quality. The product is to be applied in very small amounts!!! I do not recommend use on small animals for fleas. The odor is just too strong. Although a couple sprays misted onto a large breed dog who lives in the great outdoors works wonders for repelling ticks. I do not recommend this product to people who live in the city as it’s best for large breed dogs in the great outdoors to repel ticks.

I have been using this product for atleast 3 years on my 4 older large breed dogs and have NEVER had any problems. I am upset that I will not be able to purchase it. I found it to be an excellent product. I used it because I wanted to stay away from all the nasty chemicals since my dogs have other health issues and are on several different meds. I would recommend to anyone to try it on a small area on your pet before applying to the entire body…that is common sense. I am sorry to anyone who suffered injury or loss of your beloved pet. But any new product or drug your use for your pet should be done very wisely and not without reading all materials that come with the product.

STAY AWAY FROM SENTRY NATURAL DEFENSE ANIMAL PRODUCTS….. IT KILLS YOUR PETS. I KNOW, I just lost my little girl this morning. She was a fighter, she lived through having her left rear leg cut off by a sick person that then tossed her in a ditch when she was days old. We bottle feed her for weeks and she was a great cat. We will never forget our Itty Bitty Kitty. And yes that is/was her name.
I used this product and my 2 year old hyper cat went from only a couple of itches to being infested with fleas. She started acting off so i called the number on the back and washed it off her (all the while tiny fleas where trying to get in her eyes) in the end it was to late my cat passed away last night before I could get her to the vet this morning. I went from my normal brand to this and I will never ever do that again with any animal and blame myself for her death. Stay away and save yourself the heart ache please

I just bought sentry purrscription two days ago. Used on all four of my cats. One is now not eating. Doesn’t move, stays in one spot. If you try to move will growl. Had to force feed today so she won’t die. She is throwing up anything and everything in her stomach. How can I file a lawsuit against Sentry or petco for selling a product that will and can harm pets. Please help

If you find out how, I’d love to know. I’m so sick of bad products on the shelves.

This product caused something like a hot spot on her skin. It was real read, almost looked like it was bleeding

  10. Laurie Reynolds-Bosquet says:

I used the Sentry Purscription flea collar on my 2 cats, one is 11 and one is 5. After about 10 days I noticed scabs on the top of older cat’s neck and took the collar off. That’s when I noticed that she was missing hair and had a huge sore under her chin. I then checked my younger cat. The collar had burned the fur off the entire circumference of his neck the same width as the collar and under his chin with huge gaping sores that leaked and bled and were quite deep. I contacted the company and they said it was an allergic reaction. My younger cat’s neck is finally healing thanks to the use of Bag Balm, I’d include pictures if I could because they sounds on his neck were horrible, I still don’t know if his hair will grow back.

    1. Lauren Pauline says:

Same here unfortunately for three of mine. Never had a problem with it before and suddenly they all reacted physically. It scares me to think of any damage we don’t see.
