For years, the makers of Blue Buffalo dog food have marketed and labeled its dog food products as healthy, nutritious, and consistent with dogs’ dietary needs.
Blue Buffalo products are more expensive than many other dog foods. The company claims that the extra cost is justified because of the premium ingredients.
But consumers have alleged that these claims are deceptive, claiming that Blue Buffalo dog food products contain high levels of ingredients that are neither healthy for dogs nor consistent with their dietary needs. Accordingly, Blue Buffalo’s claims that its dog food products are healthy and nutritious for dogs may be deceptive, according to an Ohio veterinarian who warns pet owners about Blue Buffalo dog food on the her website, which also references class action lawsuits against the company.
Plaintiffs have accused the manufacturers of Blue Buffalo dog food of falsely representing the ingredients contained in the popular dog food products.
Previous Lawsuits Allege Illegal Marketing Tactics
In 2015, Blue Buffalo announced that it had reached a $32 million class action settlement based on claims that the pet food manufacturer deceived consumers about the contents of its dog foods. Thirteen class action lawsuits, one filed by competitor Nestle Purina, claimed that Blue Buffalo dog food marketed its products as free of poultry byproducts. Plaintiffs claimed they paid a premium for pet food based on false claims, in violation of both state and federal laws.
In October 2014, those lawsuits consolidated into one suit in Missouri federal court. The complaint cited statements by Blue Buffalo dog food that the product contained no soy, wheat, corn, poultry byproduct meals, artificial flavors, preservative or colors. However, numerous investigations revealed that some of those ingredients were indeed present in products with that label.
Blue Buffalo pointed the finger at feed company Wilbur-Ellis, which supplied ingredients in the dog food, as the source of the meat byproducts and ceased doing business with them, the St. Louis Post-Dispach reported at the time.
Wilbur-Ellis in 2017 faced eight criminal counts for providing “allegedly misbranded and adulterated poultry ingredients to Blue Buffalo,” according to PetFoodIndustry.com.
How to Analyze a Dog Food Label
Consumers have become increasingly concerned about the ingredients in their pet food and rely on package labeling, such as Blue Buffalo dog food, to make purchasing decisions. Premium pet food products like Blue Buffalo dog food are often purchased by consumers who want to make healthy choices for their pets.
Any pet owner should take the time to read the label on a food package. Small differences in ingredients can make a big impact on your pet’s overall health. Unfortunately, there’s little beyond the label to compare one type of dog food to another.
A common question by pet owners is whether or not byproducts inside pet food are dangerous for the animal’s health. Though byproducts do not include hooves, teeth, horns, or hair, WebMD reports that meat byproducts can contain udders, bone, blood, or brains of the animal.
Consumers can take legal action when they believe that a company has provided false information about a product. These false advertising lawsuits empower consumers to hold companies accountable.
If you believe that you have purchased a product such as Blue Buffalo dog food based on inaccurate packaging claims, you could have grounds for a false advertising lawsuit. Speaking with an experienced attorney is a recommended next step. Keeping copies of the packaging on your dog food bag could help you during an initial consultation with an attorney.

I was feeding my malamute this dog food for 6 months. Until she was getting sicker and sicker. I took her to the emergency vet 3 times and spent over 3000 just within those visits. I stopped feeding her this food and the sickness went away within a week
I’m NOT interested in the class action lawsuit.
I’ve been using Blue Buffalo products for 20 years.
I had two dachshunds one lived to be 17.5 years old, the other lived to be 15 years old.
NEVER had any issues.
I currently have two dachshunds. I adopted them 5 years ago. They’re on Blue Buffalo NO HEALTH or NO WEIGHT issues. These dachshunds are 9 and 10 years old they both weigh 12.4 lbs.
They’re feed 1/4 cup twice daily.
I will continue to use the product.
Again NO I’m not interested in a class action lawsuit.
Thank you Blue Buffalo for an awesome product and have my pet’s best interest.
I have been feeding my 2 dogs the blue buffalo adult lamb for year last year they started getting very sick & took them to the vet and the blood work came back that they both are in reanal failure at the same time. Our yorkie at stage 1 and our American Eskimo mix at stage 4. We are devastated at the fact that both dogs different breads developed the same disease at the same time. The vet bills have left us very poor. We are so tired and hurt. Please if a lawsuit against blue buffalo will help take their products off the market and save the lives of many I’m I too.
I have fed my dogs this food for the last 3 years, Im concerned for my dogs health after reading the comments, ive heard of dogs in my area having health issues and even dying due to being fed this food. I have recently stopped purchasing based off of the claims.
I’d like to become a part of a class action against this company! I’ve been feeding Blue buffalo to all my dogs for the past 10 plus years. I’m incensed that I haven’t heard about this!
I’ve lost 4 dogs, three to cancer one to a respiratory issue and my kitty to kidney failure. I’ve incurred more vet bills than I care to reveal, and was happy to do it, knowing I was doing everything in my power to keep them healthy . Then I learn this ☹️
Even now I have a bag of small dog chicken kibble in my pantry as well as blue buffalo treats.
I’m feeding my dogs
I almost alway purchased my pet food from petco or pet smart. They certainly have my purchases as well as my customer info. If Blue Buffalo had wanted to reach me, all they needed to do was contact their vendors.
I currently lack the words to describe my anger and hurt learning this information now?!?
Corporate greed is an ugly thing. This dog food is expensive, however I was willing to pay knowing I was doing the best for my dogs. I understand the need to be competitive, but I suspect there are a lot of pet parents that would pay the additional cost to know that they are getting only quality ingredients for their pets. If it was the cost of ingredients that caused the company to use lesser ingredients and misrepresent their product.
Sadly I don’t believe that was the problem…
Must consumers become chemists, scientists or the like just to understand the ingredients going into our pets food or in our own for that matter?
It sickens me ( no pun intended) How can the consumer ever trust? Honestly, paying a settlement isn’t enough. These companies should be put out of business.
In memory of My Bunny, Sophie, Enzo, Dolittle, and my dear Simon. ?
K
An enraged pet parent ?

I bought this for my 3 elderly dogs thinking it would be better for them. They all died within 4 months. I don’t know if the Blue Buffalo contributed to their worsened health.
We just lost our 7 year old black lab from having bladder stones we believe from this dog food.
Bought this exclusively for my dog from Amazon
Add me I got 5 children aka fur babies I’ve been feeding them this product
