Johnson & Johnson has been hit with a massive baby powder cancer lawsuit filed collectively by a group of plaintiffs alleging harm, injury, and even wrongful death as a result of using the company’s baby powder products.
The massive baby powder lawsuit, consisting of a mix of women who were allegedly affected by Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based powder products and loved ones filing on behalf of women who died as an alleged result of talcum powder cancer, claims that talcum powder causes cancer.
Eighty-one named plaintiffs claim they or their loved ones were diagnosed with or passed away from ovarian cancer.
These injuries and deaths are an alleged result of the use of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder products including Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower, the lawsuit states.
Massive Baby Powder Cancer Lawsuit Allegations
Each of the unrelated individuals from across the country commonly alleges the development of some unspecified subtype of ovarian cancer as a result of applying talcum powder products, including Johnson’s baby powder or Shower to Shower, to the perineal area.
Some of the 81 plaintiffs allege they used talcum powder products for decades prior to their ovarian cancer diagnosis, while others allegedly used such products for a few years.
One of the named plaintiffs in the massive baby powder cancer lawsuit, Lisa E. of Missouri, states she used talcum powder products manufactured and sold by Johnson & Johnson from 1985 to 2015. In Oct. 2014, Lisa was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
She attributes her ovarian cancer diagnosis to the “unreasonably dangerous and defective nature of talcum powder and [Johnson & Johnson’s] wrongful and negligent conduct in the research, development, testing, manufacture, production, promotion, distribution, marketing, and sale of talcum powder.”
Another named plaintiff, Milton F., alleges in the massive baby powder cancer lawsuit, holds Johnson & Johnson responsible for the death of his wife, Ann. Ann used Johnson & Johnson baby powder products and was subsequently diagnosed with ovarian cancer of which she passed away.
Talcum Powder Dangers
Talcum powder is derived from talc, which is a mineral comprised mostly of silicon, magnesium and oxygen. Many cosmetic products incorporate talcum powder in their formulations, including baby powders, facial powders and products used for feminine hygiene purposes.
But despite its wide use for decades, talcum powder has been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer in some women.
Scientists believe that when talc is used on the genitals, it can work its way into the vagina and eventually migrate to the ovaries located in the upper genital tract.
It is there where talc causes potential inflammatory responses to the substance and potentially disrupts the immune system’s response. But researchers caution that it is not exactly known just how talcum powder causes cancer.
Still, even the American Cancer Society suggests that talcum powder used in the genital area can create a small risk of ovarian cancer in some women.
