Over the last several years, many vehicles have been recalled due to defects. Millions of cars have been recalled due to a defect in the vehicles’ airbags in what may be the largest product recall in American history. Specifically, the Jeep Wrangler airbag recall affects many cars in the U.S. and worldwide.
In 2014, Takata, a major airbag manufacturer, was accused of knowing about dangerous defects with their airbags. Indeed, the New York Times published a report on Nov. 7, 2014, claiming that Takata hid the risks of its dangerous airbags from as far back as 2004.
Takata makes airbags for multiple automobile manufacturers that contain a dangerous ammonium nitrate components that over time, can deteriorate and explode. These explosions have caused injuries and even deaths when passengers or drivers have been in the cabin of a vehicle when these dangerous airbags have exploded.
Normally, this ammonium nitrate component is what inflates the airbag in the case of an accident. It is intended to inflate rapidly so that in the case of an emergency, the airbag will deploy and help to protect the driver and passenger.
However, when this component degrades over time, this chemical, the same chemical used in some bomb making, can explode. This propellant chemical ruptures inside the metal casing and, in the case of an unexpected explosion, can send metal shrapnel into the cabin. The risk becomes even greater if the vehicle subject to the Jeep Wrangler airbag recall is exposed to heat and humidity.
This metal shrapnel acts somewhat like a grenade inside the confines of an automobile cabin and can severely hurt, injure or kill the occupants of the vehicle. This explosive component should, in theory, be just enough to deploy the airbag. But it has, in many instances, been more than enough to deploy the airbag.
Dozens of automakers have recalled millions of vehicles as a result, including the Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep Wranger recall affects Jeep Wranglers made from 2007 to 2012 in the United States.
Jeep has been making vehicles for over seventy-five years beginning in 1941. Jeep Wranglers made their debut in 1986 and the automobile is now in its third generation.
Takata, the maker of these defective airbags, recently announced bankruptcy and has been accused of secretly testing airbags to see if they were defective, discovering they were, and then hiding the results, according to the New York Times.
These tests were allegedly performed in Michigan over the summer of 2004, outside of normal work hours.
Subsequently, different car manufacturers began recalling their vehicles due to the Takata recall. The Jeep Wrangler airbag recall was announced along with millions of other vehicles that were affected by the massive Takata recall.
Many Jeep owners don’t believe that automobile part manufacturer nor the car manufacturer were quick enough to institute the Jeep Wrangler airbag recall. Because of the delay, injuries to passengers and drivers could have been avoided.
If you own a Jeep Wrangler from the model years 2007 to 2012, you may be affected by the Jeep Wrangler airbag recall. If you have been injured as a result of a non-deploying airbag, it may benefit you to speak with an attorney.
