Vornado is facing a class action lawsuit claiming it sold faulty Steamfast Home and Away Travel Steam Irons, which is a breach of its duties and warranties.
The issues with the steam irons led to an initial recall of 275,000 irons and then a recently expanded recall to 1.75 million irons due to a fire and hazard from the cord when it is damaged near the bushing.
While the recall has attempted to resolve the issues, plaintiff Vera McKelley claims the company did not inform her of the recall; instead she found it referenced on social media. The Vornado steam irons recall has led to 74 iron incidents, including 18 additional reports of the power cord smoking, sparking, catching fire or overheating, the Vornado recall says.
“Assuming that the recall was effective and offered a true resolution, plaintiff is still burdened with an iron that has been devalued by defendant’s actions because the value of an Iron with a known and dangerous defect is worth much less than an Iron with a properly working and safe electrical cord,” the Vornado lawsuit says.
Vornado violated implied warranty by failing to make irons safe to operate, class action claims
A nationwide class and a South Carolina subclass are being pursued in the Vornado class action involving those who purchased the Vornado steam irons between January 2009 to September 2023.
Vornado violated the implied warranty for the irons because they should be safe to operate under normal uses and instead can lead to injuries or property damage for customers, the Vornado lawsuit claims.
“Plaintiff suffered injury in that she purchased an iron that is worthless,” the Vornado class action says. “For all intents and purposes, plaintiff’s iron is now a notoriously unsafe iron known for dangerously defective power cords.”
