LGI Homes’ Shoddy Buildings Left Homeowners With Huge Bills, Proposed Class Action Claims

A “vanilla storm” turned into a nightmare for Washington homeowners when shoddy construction resulted in snow and rain falling inside homes as siding flew around the neighborhood, a proposed class action lawsuit alleges.

The class action lawsuit will be filed in the next 21 days by Casey Law on behalf of homeowners in Suntop Farms in Enumclaw, Washington, KIRO 7 reported.

LGI Homes violated the Consumer Protection Act, the lawsuit alleges, building poor-quality houses throughout the neighborhood. Casey Law notified LGI Homes of the lawsuit on Friday, April 9.

The class action follows a February storm where brand-new LGI Homes suffered serious damage, KIRO 7 reported. At least 24 houses built by LGI Homes had sliding and shingles ripped off by 51.4 miles per hour winds, despite being designed to withstand gusts of at least 150 miles per hour, according to an inspector hired by Casey Law.

Snow and rain was also able to enter some homes due the damage, leaving homeowners facing leaks and water damage. One homeowner told KIRO 7 the situation was frustrating.

“We (have a) brand-new baby just born two weeks ago. My wife, my mother, my teenage daughter is there. It’s very heartbreaking to know my family is not in a house that’s safe.”

Many of the new houses damaged in the storm are still under warranty, but attorney Chris Casey, who is representing the homeowners, said that LGI Homes claimed the storm was an act of God and was refusing to remedy the situation.

“If it happened on one or two homes, that’s a bad day. But it happened on 24 homes. That’s more than a bad day. That’s clearly cutting corners,” he told KIRO 7.

Casey said that 40 people had signed up to be part of the class-action lawsuit, but expected many more homeowners to join as more building defects were discovered. Casey Law attorneys expected that all 288 homes in the neighborhood could face building defects.

Inspector William Martin was hired by the law firm to look into LGI Homes’ construction practices, and he said that of the 10 homes he had reviewed, all suffered from improper installations. The repairs are estimated to cost $140,000-$160,000 per home, according to KIRO 7.

Lawsuits over shoddy building materials aren’t new. In July 2020, the homeowners’ association at Martinique at the Oasis in Florida filed a lawsuit against Lennar Homes in the Miami-Dade Circuit Court, alleging shoddy construction in the South Florida community, according to Law.com. Attorneys for the community said these defects posed a danger to residents.

And in late-2019, a New Hampshire homeowner filed a class action lawsuit, claiming that the WindsorONE trim installed on his house is poorly made and prone to rotting. Lead Plaintiff Brian Begley said that the siding manufactured by the defendant knowingly used unsuitable, untreated wood for the product, while misrepresenting their siding in marketing and advertising materials.

We have huge cracks all over our house. Our upstairs bathroom is starting to slope for some reason and within a month the plumbing started leaking through the downstairs kitchen. Our stove or range broke in the first year, I tried to order the part that was broken and found out that LGI had given us one that had discontinued parts in them we still have a non- operating oven. We had an foundation specialist come in and inspect our home he said it wasn’t sinking. I’m not sure why all these things are happening. We bought our home brand new in 2019 and moved in 2020. I can’t find someone that will inspect our upstairs bathroom with out paying 500-700 dollars.

I have been in my home for 4.5 years and we had water coming up in our yard. I contacted LGI and informed them of the issue. I was promised that my water line would be fixed that day. After waiting around all day for them to show up they called me and told me that since it has been more than 2 years, they were not responsible to fix it. I came out of pocket to have my service line repaired to discover that the copper pipe was not properly flared during installation. There are more than 14 homes in this LGI development that have had the same issue. When I again contacted LGI, they told me that they are not responsible as they subcontracted out the work. I am now out thousands of dollars due to this builder consistently cutting corners. This company is also known for putting water and sewer lines in before the foundation is even poured.

Purchased our LGI home November 2020. Sidding has come off our home as a result of the wind blowing a little hard in NC (its a shame). We have several issues with things inside our home as well, walls, structure, ceiling, HAVAC, appliances, etc. There’s no way we should be experiencing these problems this soon; the homes are still new! These homes were built with quality and if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have never entertained LGI. These homes were built poorly with cheap materials and equipped with old refurbished equipment and appliances. LGI made promises they didn’t keep. It’s sad how much they get over on homeowners, especially FIRST time homeowners.

We bought an LGI home in Texas in 2021 it was brand new yet we’ve had electrical issues, foundation issues, flooring issues, humidity is always high. I am so frustrated! We are in our late 50’s this house was suppose to be our retirement home that’s why we bought new so we wouldn’t have to deal with these things. I noticed a soft spot on the wall next to our shower and I’m afraid there is a leak in there now… we just want the house we were promised.

I have same problems toilets running on floor feces in tubs. The man LGI sent to my home to fix it said it will take him over year to fix all the problems in LGI homes. I have a hole in my garage wall. Electricity not up to cod house not grounded. Light fixtures hanging from ceiling. I have spots in my kitchen ceiling where the pee and feces came from upstairs. My back door is messed up. People charge too much to fix this house. I would like some body to help me I’m a Disabled Veteran I have to take meds to calm my nerves every day to help me deal with these problems. It’s a new house.

I bought and LGI home in October of 2020 and have put so much money into trying to keep it ip. Everything is falling apart! we have all stepped on different nails on the stairs, the carpet feels like there is no padding and is somewhat slippery. The metal in the walls are showing and the drywall is super thin! One small hit and I’ve got holes in my wall. I’ve had to repaint because within months the walls looked as though we had been in the house for 20 years. We tried to clean the walls and the paint wipes off and makes it look worse. The dishwasher stopped working and the plumbing is terrible. I had to replace the kitchen sink and the shower heads within the 1st 6 months. The windows are hard to open and some of the wood is ripping off the door. The closet door in the kids rooms always go off track. Some base boards came off and I had to reseal it. I can’t believe much money I’ve put into the house and there is still so much more to fix. It will be 3 years in October.

My new build lacked proper ventilation and insulation causing mold to destroy the home. We are having to displace while this is remediated. Costing us over 20 K and LGI is taking no account. -Cape Coral Florida
