Meat soup contamination overview:

  • Who: The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for some ready-to-eat meat soup products.
  • Why: The products may spoil prematurely.
  • Where: The meat soup contamination alert is active in the United States and Mexico.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for some ready-to-eat meat soup products due to possible contamination.

The alert was published on the FSIS website April 25. It applies to certain Ivar’s and Pike Place soups.

According to the notice, the ready-to-eat meat soup products may have been prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions, which may result in the product spoiling prematurely.

The FSIS said it is issuing the public health alert to ensure that consumers are aware that the products should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase, it said.

The recalled soup products can be seen here. They bear establishment number “EST. 20173” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide and exported to Mexico.

Product found to be bloated and spoiled, notice says

The problem was discovered when the company had multiple consumer complaints regarding bloated soup packages, it said.

Upon further review, it found some products had spoiled prematurely.

“The establishment’s lab testing of the prematurely spoiled products found high levels of spoilage bacteria in the products,” the notice says.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness related to the recalled products so far, the company said.

Consumption of food contaminated with spoilage organisms can cause illness in immunocompromised individuals. Consumers who have purchased the recalled soup products are urged not to consume them. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

Meanwhile, Sovos Brands has issued a recall on jars of Rao’s Made for Home Slow Simmered Soup, Chicken & Gnocchi, as some of the jars of soup may contain undeclared egg.
