Certain Jennie O brand ground turkey products have been linked with a recent outbreak of salmonella, leading the company to announce a salmonella recall.
November Salmonella Outbreak
After receiving reports of a salmonella outbreak across 35 states in November, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated an investigation. According to the CDC, 164 people were affected in the outbreak, 63 of whom have been hospitalized due to the severity. One person, a California resident, has died as a result.
According to the CDC, the outbreak has been associated with turkey products, but not with any single source or single supplier.
“The outbreak strain of Salmonella Reading is present in live turkeys and in many types of raw turkey products, indicating it might be widespread in the turkey industry,” noted the federal agency.
Those affected by salmonella poisoning may exhibit symptoms between 12 and 72 hours after exposure. These symptoms most often include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. In cases where diarrhea becomes severely dehydrating, hospitalization may be necessary. Unfortunately, salmonella can be extremely severe, and may ultimately prove fatal for some. Most at risk are children under five and adults 65 or older.
The Jennie O Salmonella Recall
Jennie O
announced its salmonella recall on Nov. 15 of this year.
More than 147,000 pounds of ground turkey were affected by the salmonella recall. The Jennie O recall includes ground turkey with sell-by dates of Oct. 1 and Oct. 2., in 1-pound packages of 85 percent and 93 percent lean varieties. Some packages were Italian Seasoned or Taco Seasoned. Products affected by the recall are printed with the USDA inspection mark “P-190.” A full list of products included in the Jennie O recall can be found on our investigation page.
Though this turkey is no longer in stores, consumers who have stored the meat in their freezers to consume later may still be at risk. The problem is far-reaching: products that may be contaminated were shipped all across the United States, to 23 different states. A list of states, as well as stores known to have sold the affected products, can be also found on our investigation page.
So far, though the CDC has reported that the outbreak was not caused by a single source or supplier. In fact, the Jennie O recall is the only one of its kind among turkey producers. No others have yet issued a similar recall.
Filing a Jennie O Salmonella Lawsuit
If you purchased one of the affected Jennie O ground turkey products after Sept. 11, 2018, with a use-by date of Oct. 1 or Oct. 2, you may be eligible to join a lawsuit investigation. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by a salmonella infection, it can at the very least help to alleviate the financial burden incurred by medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
