ASUS is recalling certain ROG Maximus Z690 Hero products over concerns that the motherboards were burning, melting and/or producing smoke during normal use.

On Dec. 29, ASUS published a statement about the ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard after receiving reports of a few incidents in North America. The company says it identified a potential issue in the production lines that may have led to the issue.

The ROG Maximus Z690 Hero is a high-end motherboard designed for use on gaming desktop computers.

The ASUS recall affects ROG Maximus Z690 Hero units that were manufactured in 2021 with the part number 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 and serial numbers starting with MA, MB or MC. This information can be located on the product packaging.

Reports of Burning, Smoke Smell Lead to Z690 Hero Recall

Z690 Hero users in North America have reported a variety of issues, including smelling smoke and/or discovering burn marks on the motherboard. Others observed error code 53 on the screen. One user reportedly posted on Reddit that a component of the Z690 Hero motherboard was “literally on fire.”

ASUS says that it is working to identify all of the affected Z690 Hero motherboards and that it will be working with the relevant government agencies to establish a program to replace the recalled products.

“Thank you so much to everyone for your patience and support while we are working through the replacement program,” ASUS posted on its website.

I also have the Z690 Hero. It has been running for three weeks and no problems so far. Just received the ASUS notification Friday through Newegg. The notice said the cause of the failures was a capacitor installed with the wrong polarity. Talked with an ASUS rep who wants me to send the motherboard in for repair. I told him that was not acceptable and ASUS should send me a new MB. This MB is in a computer I use for client technical studies and I can’t afford to wait through a lengthy repair process. The rep is bumping this up to higher level and they will contact me next week regarding my replacement request.

The RMA form the rep emailed me has a link to purchase a shipping label from ASUS. It is an affront to put the cost of returning an expensive MB on the buyer when the cause is a manufacturing quality control failure.
