A recent lawsuit filed by a school district against Juul claims that the vape company’s products have cost schools thousands of dollars, as well as disrupting the learning environment and harming students. School administrators who believe that Juul has caused harm to students may be able to file a class action lawsuit over alleged Juul health hazards and their associated costs.

School Administrators File Lawsuits Against Juul

According to a recent lawsuit filed on behalf of the San Diego Unified School District, the use of Juul e-cigarettes and vape pens has become so prevalent in schools that these products have begun to disrupt the learning environment.

This recent lawsuit claims that Juul use by students has resulted in an increase in student absences, as well as vaping-related illnesses.

According to the complaint, the costs of teen vaping have diverted funding away from learning, and towards educational campaigns focused on Juul health hazards and smoking prevention. The Superintendent for the district, Cindy Marten, stated, “This lawsuit supports district goals by holding Juul accountable for its harmful marketing practices and unsafe products.”

The school district is seeking compensation for the expenses of creating educational anti-vaping programs, installing vape detectors, and assigning teachers new tasks meant to combat vaping, including restroom surveillance.

In addition to the San Diego Unified School District, nearly 100 other districts have filed lawsuits against Juul regarding the company’s popular vape pens. Several of these cases have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation.

As Juul is extremely popular among teens, superintendents of these districts claim that their schools have become ground zero for the health problems caused by Juul and other e-cigarettes.

In addition to the cost of educational campaigns regarding Juul health hazards, several school districts have cited other expenses directly related to the use of e-cigarettes by students. At least one school has reportedly spent thousands of dollars on installing vape detectors in bathrooms that alert school officials if e-cigarette vapor is detected. Another school has added a staff position costing $32,000 a year to monitor students and prevent vaping on the premises.

Juul Health Hazards for Teens

Juul has been criticized by parents and school officials before for the brand’s kid-friendly vape flavors and allegedly unethical marketing strategies targeting teens. Although the company recently removed fruit and dessert flavored vape pods from the market, the popularity of the product has already led to an increase in underage e-cigarette use.

E-cigarette and vape pen use by teens may result in negative health consequences, including vape-related lung illnesses, lung cancer, nicotine overdose, and seizures.

As teens’ brains are still developing, exposure to nicotine at an early age may result in a higher likelihood of becoming addicted to the drug, as well as more dangerous side effects.

If you are a school administrator who has been affected by vaping in schools, you may be eligible to hire an attorney and file a Juul health hazards class action lawsuit against vape manufacturers on behalf of your school district.
