The White House cites vaping health risks, including a potentially deadly lung disease, as reasons to ban flavored vaping products. The White House has announced plans to ban non-tobacco flavored vaping products from the U.S. market due to vaping health risks. President Donald Trump issued a statement regarding the ban on Sept. 11, but the federal regulation will take a couple of months for implementation.

What Prompted the Move to Ban Flavored E-liquids?

The ban comes as at least six people have died of a new, serious lung illness that resembles pneumonia. Nearly 400 people from 36 different states have been hospitalized, some placed in medically induced comas to keep them from pulling out hoses from life-saving ventilators that are helping them breathe.

The new lung disease has placed vaping health risks at the top of everyone’s mind as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to investigate what the cases all have in common. So far, no single vape juice or e-cigarette device has been pinpointed as a culprit, but most patients have a reported history of using vaping products that contain THC.

E-cigarettes work by heating a liquid that then becomes an aerosol that users inhale into their lungs. The liquid may contain nicotine, marijuana-derived THC or CBD oils, chemical flavorings and other potentially toxic additives.

Some liquids contain vitamin E acetate oil as a thickening agent. On Sept. 9, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued subpoenas to three companies that market and sell thickening agents used in vaping products sold on the black market. He also said he will sign any new legislation that bans flavored e-cigarette products.

The state of New York has reported 64 patients who have developed the vaping lung illness since the beginning of June.

Vaping Health Risks Continue to Unfold

Vaping
is a relatively new nicotine delivery system and the extent of the ill health effects is still unknown.

Health warnings began when some young people began to suffer from seizures, which were thought to be caused by the high levels of nicotine delivered to the body at such a fast rate. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to investigate 127 different reports of seizures or other neurological interferences, such as tremors or fainting, potentially linked to vaping between 2010 and 2019.

In the midst of the reports of seizures and severe lung disease, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched an investigation on Aug. 29 into the marketing practices of Juul, the leading vape company in the U.S. The FTC is looking into whether the company practiced deceptive marketing by targeting young teens who cannot legally buy e-cigarettes.

Last week, the FDA questioned Juul’s sales and marketing claims that vaping is safer than using tobacco products. According to CNET, Juul told CNBC that the company will not stop promoting its vaping products as a safer choice over cigarettes.

According to a study by Monitoring the Future, 37 percent of high school seniors said they have vaped in the last year, which is an increase of more than 10 percent from the year prior.
