Juul Temporarily Halts Sales of Fruity Vape Juul Pod Flavors
According to an announcement from Juul on Jan. 14, the company has discontinued production and sales of Juul pod flavors including mango, fruit, cucumber, and vanilla. Nicotine pods will continue to be sold in flavors including tobacco and mint. Prior to the announcement that Juul would stop selling flavored nicotine pods in Canada, the FDA issued a ban on most flavored nicotine products in the U.S.
Criticism against Juul has been mounting for years, as anti-nicotine advocates claim that the company purposefully marketed teen-friendly Juul pod flavors in an effort to corner the market on youth nicotine consumption.
Juul has denied that the company has marketed nicotine products to youths, despite evidence that underage nicotine consumption has massively increased due to the popularity of e-cigarettes and vape pens. According to the FDA and youth advocates, the discontinuation of fruit flavored products may be a step towards reducing teen nicotine use.
According to CNBC, a spokesman for Juul stated in regard to the change, “The leadership team will continue to review JUUL Labs’ global policies and practices and will take appropriate actions as the company works to combat underage use and preserve the historic opportunity to transition adult smokers off of combustible cigarettes.”
The company stated that the temporary halt in production of flavored vape products is meant to give the company a chance to regain public trust. However, Juul did not rule out the possibility of reintroducing flavored Juul pods to the market in the future.
In addition to the reduction in available nicotine flavors, e-cigarette and vape advertising has also recently been reduced in the country. In December, Health Canada announced that e-cigarette advertising on social media and in public areas would be banned, in order to limit exposure to minors.
According to one study of Canadian teenagers, 96 percent of 16 to 18 year olds who used vape products preferred flavored nicotine over unflavored varieties. Approximately half of these teens also stated that if flavored nicotine products were banned, they would stop vaping.
Youth Vaping May Lead to Serious Side Effects
While nicotine may lead to serious health side effects for smokers of any age, teens and young adults may be especially susceptible to the harmful effects of vaping. In addition to the risk of developing lung cancer or vaping lung illnesses, teens may be at an increased risk of experiencing seizures after using e-cigarettes.
According to information from the FDA in October 2018, use of Juul vape pens may be associated seizures. Over 127 cases of seizures related to e-cigarette use have been reported to the FDA.
If you or your child has experienced seizures after using a Juul or other e-cigarette, you may be eligible to hire a qualified attorney and file a class action lawsuit against the device manufacturer.
