Fruity Juul Pod Flavors Removed from Canadian Markets

Due to concerns about the growing number of young users of vapes and e-cigarettes, as well as the spread of vape-related seizures and lung illnesses, Juul has pulled several vape pod flavors from the U.S. and Canadian markets. While tobacco and mint flavors will still be available for Canadian smokers who prefer flavored pods, flavors like mango, fruit, vanilla, and cucumber have been removed.

Juul has not recalled flavored vape pods that have already hit store shelves, but the company announced that it will not be restocking these flavors in Canada once the current supply has sold out.

Juul Pod Flavors May Entice Teens to Try Smoking

Although it is illegal in Canada for youths under the age of 18 or 19 depending on location to buy e-cigarettes, the enticing flavors of these products may have contributed to the uptick in teen nicotine use. Although nicotine use by teens had been in decline for many years, the introduction of vape pens and e-cigarettes to the market has caused teen use rates to skyrocket.

According to one teenager who decided to study high school vaping practices for a journalism class project, JUUL pod flavors such as mango and fruit should have been banned a long time ago. Emma McCluskey spoke to CBC Kids News about seeing some classmates smoking an entire nicotine vape pod in one hour.

One vape pod contains as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. Moreover, it may be easier to consume more nicotine through vape pods than traditional combustible cigarettes when the nicotine is masked by fruity flavors. Additionally, as many as 25 percent of teen e-cigarette users believe that they are only inhaling flavored vapor, rather than nicotine.

Most flavored vape pens contain nicotine or other carcinogens, and many brands do not even offer nicotine-free flavors. Nicotine is highly addictive, and use can lead to nicotine poisoning.

Side Effects of Vape Pens and E-Cigarettes

In addition to the dangerous side effects including lung cancer caused by consuming nicotine, the use of vape pens may come with additional consequences.

Vape-related lung illnesses have affected thousands of people in the U.S. and Canada and have resulted in several dozen deaths. Other users of vape pens have reported experiencing seizures or nicotine toxicity after using the products. Vaping seizures even led to an FDA investigation. These side effects may be especially dangerous for teens and youth nicotine users, whose developing brains may be exponentially affected by exposure to nicotine.

If you or your child has suffered from seizures, nicotine toxicity, or other side effects related to the use of vape pens and e-cigarettes, you may be eligible to hire a qualified attorney and file a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer of these products.
