In June 2019, U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi announced that he would be launching an investigation into JUUL health concerns and the company’s effects on the “youth e-cigarette epidemic”. According to CNN, the congressman wrote a letter to JUUL CEO Kevin Burns, requesting that the company “provide memoranda and communications regarding its social media practices, advertising, and the product’s long-term impact on consumer health.”

JUUL has been previously criticized for targeting youth with their trendy advertising and attractive vaping flavors. On college campuses, and even in high schools, “JUULing” is a popular fad and considered to be cool. Unfortunately, young individuals may be particularly susceptible to nicotine addictions – leading to a lifelong smoking or vaping habit that is difficult to kick.

“The safety and well-being of America’s youth is not for sale,” Krishnamoorthi wrote in his letter. “I am extremely concerned about reports that JUUL’s high nicotine content is fueling addiction and that frequent JUUL use is sending kids across the country into rehab, some as young as 15.”

JUUL and Nicotine

Unlike other e-cigarette fluids, JUUL pods only come in five percent nicotine varieties. While other products may be able to provide the same vaping experience without the risk of nicotine addiction, one JUUL pod reportedly provides the same amount of nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes.

The company has reportedly maintained that their products are not intended for children and that JUUL products are instead intended for adults who no longer want to smoke traditional cigarettes. According to CNN, the company even made a statement that they will be making an effort to “combat youth usage and help adult smokers switch from combustible cigarettes, which remain the leading cause of preventable death around the world.”

However, teen usage still remains, leading to parents to file lawsuits against the company for injuries to their children.

JUUL Investigation

According to Fortune magazine, Krishnamoorthi is not the only public official looking into JUUL practices. In April, 11 other senators reportedly launched a similar investigation into the company. Additionally, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have also announced their investigations into JUUL methods.

JUUL may be under investigation by the FDA for other reasons relating to public health. In April 2019, the FDA issued a statement that they had received several reports of seizures following vape usage. Since 2010, there have reportedly been 35 instances of seizures following the use of e-cigarettes.

According to the agency, there is not a significant amount of information available about vaping seizures. Some of the patients were first-time e-cigarette users while others were long-time users. In some situations, patients had a previous seizure history. Some patients reportedly experienced seizures with other substances including marijuana and amphetamines.

While there is not a wealth of information available about JUUL health concerns, the FDA wanted to warn patients about the potential risk of seizures with e-cigarette use during the agency’s investigation.

“While we’re still learning about the long-term potential benefits and health risks of e-cigs, existing scientific research offers some clear evidence that several of the dangerous chemicals in tobacco smoke are also present in the aerosol of some e-cig products,” said FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb in a Twitter statement.
