the health dangers of juul are the basis for parental concern

Florida parents recently filed a JUUL lawsuit, alleging that their teenage daughter started suffering seizures caused by the popular electronic cigarette.

The claim filed against JUUL and two big tobacco companies accuses the companies of deliberately marketing their products to younger consumers, while failing to warn against the health dangers of JUUL, Orlando Weekly reports.

According to the lawsuit, plaintiffs Jared and Erin N. noticed that their 15-year-old daughter had become addicted to JUUL cartridges in a very short period of time. The teen was reportedly introduced to the electronic cigarette at school and was vaping cartridges on a regular basis.

The addiction reportedly took over the girl’s life. The parents’ suit states that “all (their daughter) cared about was where she was going to get her next JUUL from, where she was going to get her next hit from.”  The addiction became so bad that the parents were forced to pull their daughter out of school, according to the suit.

Overview of JUUL Cartridge Problems

A single JUUL cartridge contains as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, according to truthinitiative.org. Seizures are reportedly one of the serious health dangers of JUUL.

The parents lawsuit accuses JUUL of purposefully targeted teens through “flashy” advertisements and sweet cartridge flavors, along with a sleek and attractive design. Furthermore, the plaintiffs claim that their daughter was unaware JUUL cartridges contained nicotine until she began experiencing frequent cravings.

JUUL and other electronic cigarettes are marketed as safer alternatives to smoking, but still contain nicotine and can be potentially addictive.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), JUUL cartridges contain nicotine salts from tobacco leaves and are directly absorbed into the body at approximately the same rate as nicotine from typical cigarettes. But JUUL cartridges reportedly do not produce an “irritating feeling in the chest and lungs that combustible cigarettes do,” the AAFP says, which may make these products more attractive to teenagers.

In addition, the AAFP states JUUL cartridges contain more than twice the amount of nicotine concentration as many other electronic cigarettes, which can cause an addiction to develop at a faster rate.

JUUL cartridges resemble flashdrives and can easily be concealed from parents and teachers. The cartridges are reportedly simple to use and require no experience or instructions.

A 2018 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that millions of middle and high school students are smoking e-cigarettes and the figure is expected to rise since teens reportedly are unaware of the health dangers of JUUL.

In addition to the questionable marketing tactics allegedly aimed at teenagers, the claimants are hoping to raise awareness of how JUUL cartridges are being used in schools and are urging the company to change its advertisements.

According to JUUL spokesman Ted Kwong, the company is “committed to eliminating combustible cigarettes, the number one cause of preventable death in the world.” Kwong also said that JUUL cartridges are “intended to be an available alternative for current adult smokers only.
