The Atlantic reports that in early 2019, JUUL Labs changed course on their marketing tactics for their e-cigarette products by focusing heavily on the way that their products can be used to help quit smoking cigarettes. Their website states that the JUUL Labs mission is to “improve the lives of the world’s one billion adult smokers by eliminating cigarettes.”

A JUUL spokesperson told The Atlantic: “We do not want non-nicotine users to buy JUUL products and that is why our marketing is aimed at adult smokers age 35 and up.” The email statement also included the disclaimer: “JUUL products are not intended to be used as cessation products, including for the cure or treatment of nicotine addiction, relapse prevention, or relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms.”

JUUL Labs has been previously criticized for its early marketing strategies that reportedly targeted youths. According to Forbes, from mid-2015 to 2016, JUUL marketing allegedly used bright colors, youthful models, and social media ads to market their products. Launch events for the products allegedly included youth-oriented bands and free product tastings.

In contrast with the company’s recent marketing changes, early marketing allegedly contained little to no reference about JUUL products being used to switch from traditional cigarettes. These marketing strategies have been accused of purposely targeting young adults – increasing the chance that teens would become addicted to nicotine and therefore rely on JUUL products.

Health Effects of JUUL Usage

The most notable health effect of JUUL usage is the increased risk for nicotine addiction. All JUUL pods contain nicotine, meaning that it is likely that consumers will become addicted to nicotine after using a JUUL pen regularly.

In the case of habitual cigarette smokers, who are already addicted to nicotine and are seeking a healthier option than traditional cigarettes, the nicotine content is exactly why they may chose to use JUUL pens. However, younger users targeted by the cultural phenomenon of JUUL usage may be unknowingly trapped inside a nicotine addiction that is difficult to break.

More recently, e-cigarettes such as JUUL products have been linked to seizures. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently revealed that e-cigarette usage is potentially linked to e-cigarette usage.

According to the agency’s announcement, they received 35 reports of seizures with e-cigarette usage between 2010 and 2019. Although this is not a huge amount of incidences, the FDA warned the public that they would be investigating the link to see if JUULs and other e-cigarettes increase the risk of seizures.

“The FDA continues to monitor all adverse experiences reported to the agency about the use of e-cigarettes and encourages the public to report cases of individuals who use e-cigarettes and have had a seizure via the online Safety Reporting Portal,” the FDA said in their announcement.

Unfortunately, many of the health effects of JUUL and e-cigarette use are not known. Research has been able to establish that e-cigarettes are safer than traditional cigarettes, but it is hard to determine what the full risks are.
