Concerns about the health effects of e cigarettes and the growing number of underage users led San Francisco to issue a ban on the sale of them in the city.
San Francisco legislators passed the ban with a unanimous vote in June. JUUL, the largest e cigarette company in the United States, took issue with the ban, and has formed a plan of attack to have it overturned.
JUUL’s method of countering San Francisco’s ban is to use a ballot initiative to place additional restrictions on online and storefront e cigarette retailers, but continue to allow electronic cigarettes to be sold there. The campaign — Coalition for Reasonable Vaping Regulation — has so far collected approximately 20,000 signatures, far more than the required 9,485 to qualify to get it on the November ballot.
City records show that JUUL has committed $500,000 to the campaign, teaming up with a variety of business groups and adult vapers.
JUUL maintains that its nicotine vaping products can help adults quit smoking. But there are rising concerns that vape products from JUUL and other companies are introducing countless young people to smoking and nicotine addiction, as well as other detrimental health effects of e cigarettes.
In 2018, millions of middle and high school students used e cigarette products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports. From 2017, e cigarette usage has increased by 78 percent among high school students, and by 48 percent among middle schoolers. A whopping 20.8 percent of high school students are now vaping, according to the FDA.
Vaping has also been associated with severe side effects, including nicotine addiction and seizures, which the FDA says is a known side effect of nicotine toxicity.
The agency encourages e cigarette users to report any issues related to the use of the product.
Filing a Lawsuit Over Health Effects of E Cigarettes
Some e cigarette users, including JUUL , claim that they were not sufficiently warned about the risk of seizures and nicotine poisoning associated with vaping prior to purchasing these devices. Moreover, some users (especially youth) may actually be unaware that JUUL products and other e cigarettes even contain nicotine.
If you or someone you love has suffered from seizures or other health effects of e cigarettes, you may be able to file a lawsuit and pursue compensation. Filing a lawsuit cannot undo the pain and suffering caused by the health effects of e cigarettes, like nicotine addiction and seizures, but it can help alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
An attorney can help you determine if you have a claim, navigate the complexities of litigation, and maximize your potential compensation.
