Chevrolet has issued recalls on a number of its makes and models, affecting hundreds of thousands of car owners.
These Chevy recalls were issued over a defective airbag system that can cause serious injuries and, in some cases, fatalities for the driver or passengers. The airbag system that prompted the Chevy recalls is the Takata system, which is also used in vehicles from several manufacturers other than Chevrolet.
Some of the vehicles included in these Chevy recalls are:
- 2010-2013 Avalanche
- 2010-2014 Silverado HD
- 2010-2013 Silverado LD
- 2010-2014 Suburban
- 2010-2014 Tahoe
Defective Airbag Chevy Recalls
The front airbags in the vehicles included in the Chevy recalls were found to have a simple but potentially deadly defect. The Takata airbag defect places drivers and passengers at serious risk of injury or even death.
The Chevy recalls focus on vehicles that use Takata-made airbags, which are reportedly capable of exploding rather than expanding.
Reports indicate that the Takata airbags can explode with no warning, which can injure or even kill the driver and passenger. The problem has been linked with the airbag’s inflator component, which has a metal cartridge loaded with ammonium nitrate propellant.
While airbags are designed to inflate very quickly in case of a car accident, these defective airbags inflate much more rapidly than they should.
The sheer force involved can cause the metal cartridge inside to explode, flinging metal shrapnel into the car and towards driver and passengers alike. Airbags are supposed to be life-saving devices, but this defect can turn them into explosive hazards.
Experts note that these airbags lack the right amount of drying agent that is meant to regulate the force of their deployment which may cause explosions instead of saving lives.
A growing number of consumers who own vehicles involved in the Chevy recalls have filed lawsuits against their car’s manufacturer and Takata itself, the airbag manufacturer. Takata has been hit with a slew of lawsuits and fines since the Chevy recalls and news of this dangerous defect first broke—so many, in fact, that the airbag manufacturer has filed for bankruptcy.
Automakers may have been aware of the danger involved with these Takata airbags for a significant period of time, lawsuits claim, yet then failed to warn customers about the serious risks associated with the airbag system.

Other manufacturers affected by the Takata defect include Cadillac, GMC, Dodge and more.
Owners of Chevy vehicles affected by the Takata recall may be able to seek compensation. Filing a lawsuit over the Chevy Takata airbag recall cannot take away any pain and suffering caused by device failure, or any property damage done to your car, but it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and repair work.
