Lume deodorant class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Melissa Nelson filed a class action lawsuit against Lume Deodorant LLC.
- Why: Nelson claims Lume falsely advertises the effectiveness of its deodorant.
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.
- What are my options: Skinceuticals offers deodorant alternatives to Lume.
Lume falsely advertises that the deodorant it sells is more effective than it actually is, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiff Melissa Nelson claims Lume misleads consumers by taking a study out of context to justify labeling that its deodorant is “clinically proven to block body odor all day and continue to control odor for 72 hours.”
“This statement is false and misleading because the study relied on only evaluated the product compared to competitors and concluded it was superior to them, not that it blocked odor all day nor continued to control odor for 72 hours,” the Lume class action states.
Nelson wants to represent a New York class and multistate consumer fraud class of individuals who have purchased Lume’s deodorant product.
Study too small, not diverse enough, Lume class action says
The study Lume used to justify its deodorant product labeling did not contain a sample size that was either large or diverse enough “to prove the product blocked odor all day nor continued to control odor for 72 hours,” the Lume deodorant lawsuit alleges.
“Consumers expect a ‘clinically proven’ claim to mean a significant degree of scientific consensus and/or that the relied upon study was subject to peer-review, even though neither exists here,” the class action states.
Nelson claims Lume is guilty of fraud and unjust enrichment and of violating several state consumer fraud acts, New York General Business Law and the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act.
She demands a jury trial and requests an award of monetary, statutory and/or punitive damages for herself and all class members.
In other personal hygiene product news, a number of companies faced class action lawsuits last year over claims their dry shampoo aerosol products contained the cancer-causing chemical benzene.

I purchased both deodorant, wipes, and gel after seeing the commercials. I have been using the product since April 2025. I found that the deodorant and other products all have a pleasant smell that I love. However, as time went on, I would sometimes smell quite smelly after walking the dog for its daily stroll. Once I returned home, I found myself washing up and reapplying my deodorant as I was smelling “smelly” under my arms. In August, I felt something crusty under my armpits, and wondered if the deodorant was somehow becoming dried-out deodorant mixed with my underarm sweat, creating this cake-like debris. I washed off the debris and reapplied the deodorant. Yesterday, 11 September, I noticed it again, and repeated the wash up and reapply. Today, for the first time, under my arms feel sore and, under closer scrutiny, I see a whelping-like rash under my right armpit. Under my left armpit, I feel the beginnings of that cake-like debris forming. Today, it is also hurting under my right armpit, where I washed up and applied some Neosporin antiseptic cream. I am now concerned about the cause of it and its impact on my bloodstream and overall health. As of today, 11 September, I will no longer use it; however, I will keep the open container and the new, unopened one in case the ingredients need to be examined. I will also refrain from using the bath gel or wipes, assuming they all contain the same ingredients that are affecting my skin negatively. I took pictures of my right underarm pits and am worried. If this does not clear up or worsens, I will see my physician. I am livid for believing the lie and the hype that has now irritated my skin.
Not sure what is going on but I am a long time Lume user and it’s not the same. I am breaking out in rashes and it’s just not working any longer, even though I have done everything they suggest.
I tried lume for a while and it started giving me chemical like burns on my body and between my thighs and my arm pits. It was awful! When I stopped using it, it all went away!
I have been using LUMÈ for years and with With my most recent purchase I’ve noticed that it has not controlled oder or wetness. I purchase the unscented or powder. I have to apply several times during the day and use body spray to mask any smell. At $15 a stick this is ridiculous.
I just started using the product this Summer 2025. My skin is literally busting open and it smells bad. I developed to washed near my armpits. I have discontinued using the product. I need the corporate number or how I join in the lawsuit
