Skincare company Yes To Inc. has agreed to pay $750,000 to end claims its recalled Yes To Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow-Boosting Unicorn Paper Mask caused skin irritation and redness.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the Yes To Grapefruit mask recall in January 2020 after consumers complained the product caused skin irritation in adults and children.

As a result of the recall, the company pulled the mask from shelves at major retailers in the U.S.

Lead plaintiffs Imani Whitfield and Shawanna McCoy filed their class action lawsuit that same month, seeking to represent a nationwide Class and Pennsylvania Subclass of consumers who had purchased the Yes To Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow-Boosting Unicorn Paper Mask.

According to the class action lawsuit, one consumer complained about the skin irritation issue with the Yes To Grapefruit mask via social media as early as September 2019.

Whitfield and McCoy alleged the company knew about the complaint because it responded to the post, instructing the consumer to email the company’s customer service department. However, it failed to take any further action.

Yes to Grapefruit Unicorn mask“This delay allowed Defendant to reap a significant financial windfall over the Christmas season, while putting its customers at risk,” the complaint said. “Due to Defendant’s behavior, consumers were forced to suffer the consequences while Defendant reaped significant financial compensation from unsuspecting consumers.”

Under the terms of the proposed settlement, Class Members submitting valid claims may be eligible to recover $3 for each mask purchased or used, up to a maximum of six. No proof of purchase will be required.

No other relief is provided under the settlement terms.

If the Yes To Grapefruit mask settlement receives preliminary approval as expected Feb. 26, 2021, consumers will be able to file claims until April 12, 2021. Those wishing to opt out of the settlement will have until Aug. 10, 2021, to do so.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for Sept. 24, 2021.
