Some claim that that CP4 pumps are defective and are, in fact, incompatible with U.S. vehicles, which can cause significant damage to the fuel system. An allegedly defective GM fuel pump was installed in a slew of Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks that use Duramax diesel engines, leading to serious damage to the engines.

What Are CP4 Pumps?

General Motors started to install Duramax V8 diesel engines in Chevrolet and GMC vehicles in 2001 models. Since then, all medium to heavy duty trucks and vans have had these engines as an available option.

The Bosch CP4 pumps are a component of GM’s Duramax V8 diesel engines. They are a specific type of fuel pump, which has been in use in these engines for the last several years.

Are CP4 Pumps Defective?

The Bosch CP4 fuel pump has been equipped in Duramax engines since 2011, according to a recent class action lawsuit. However, some claim that this specific type of fuel pump is defective and is, in fact, incompatible with U.S. vehicles.

According to reports, the CP4 pump is incompatible with U.S. diesel fuel, as it was designed with European diesel fuel in mind. The defect is allegedly significant, and may cause problems for the entire fuel system, resulting in a substantial repair bill.

Consumers allege that the use of U.S. diesel fuel does not allow the CP4 pump to become sufficiently lubricated, which wears it down and even causes metal shavings to be released into the fuel system.

Has Litigation Been Filed?

According to a recent class action lawsuit, the defective pump makes the fuel system prone to catastrophic failure, which could cause thousands of dollars in damage.

“From the very first time as a brand new vehicle when the customer turns the key and starts the engine, the failure of the CP4 begins,” claims the lawsuit. “Over time, it will slowly and surely burn up, starving the fuel system of lubricant.”

General Motors filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on the grounds that they were unaware of these issues prior to the vehicles being shipped to dealers, but the motion was rejected in a California district court. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has allegedly been receiving complaints about this issue for quite some time.

The class action lawsuit includes a number of vehicles, including the following:

  • 2011-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD (6L V8 Duramax LML engine)
  • 2011-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD (6.6L V8 Duramax LML)
