Keys to a red rental carIf you have rented a car in Florida from one of several car rental agencies including National, Alamo, or Enterprise, and purchased optional car rental insurance, you may be eligible to participate in a free Florida rental car insurance class action lawsuit investigation.

According to multiple customer complaints and class action lawsuits, some companies may be using manipulative or deceptive marketing tactics to convince consumers to pay for unnecessary insurance when they rent a car in Florida.

What is Car Rental Insurance?

Car rental insurance is a type of optional car insurance offered by most car rental companies like National, Alamo, and Enterprise.

The purpose of this insurance is to cover any damage that may be inflicted on the vehicle while the consumer is renting it, as well as injuries incurred while driving. According to NerdWallet, your car rental agency may offer several types of optional car insurance, including:

  • Collision coverage, or a loss damage waiver. This type of insurance waives customer liability in the event that the rental car is stolen or damaged.
  • Liability coverage, or insurance that covers any damage done to other people’s vehicles or property. This insurance protects renters from potential lawsuits after car accidents.
  • Personal accident insurance. This insurance covers medical costs that may result from a car accident, including ambulance rides, medical bills, and death benefits.
  • Personal effects insurance. This insurance protects items that are kept in the rental. If a renter’s luggage or personal items are stolen from the car, this insurance will cover the cost of those items.

Is Rental Car Insurance Necessary to Rent a Car in Florida?

Although this insurance is often unnecessary, many car rental services may pressure renters into paying for it. Rental car insurance usually ranges from $10 to $30 a day.

However, most people’s regular car insurance policies also apply to rental vehicles, so the short-term insurance offered by a car rental company may unnecessarily duplicate their existing coverage.

Additionally, most health insurance policies will cover medical bills stemming from car accidents and injuries. Homeowners or renters who have insurance policies on their dwellings may also be be covered for items stolen from rental cars.

Consumers may want to check their individual insurance policies before purchasing additional rental insurance they may not need from a car rental agency. Additionally, Business Insider reports that some credit cards also offer free rental car insurance for cardholders as long as they pay for the vehicle rental with the card.

According to customer complaints and investigations, some car rental companies may be using unethical or manipulative practices to convince consumers to purchase unnecessary car rental insurance. These tactics may include last minute changes, using intimidation or scare tactics, or not being clear that the insurance is not a necessary purchase.

If you have been pressured into paying for unnecessary car insurance when you tried to rent a car in Florida, you may qualify to join a class action investigation or lawsuit regarding deceptive and manipulative rental car company practices.

Victims who were pressured into paying for unnecessary insurance by agents from National, Alamo, or Enterprise may be more likely to receive their owed compensation by hiring an experienced attorney to represent them in their case.

  1. Kristina Marelich says:

This recently happened to me, my vehicle was involved in an accident and I was given a rental car for a week until my vehicle was fixed, the counter person at Hertz in The Villages, FL , began asking me if I was going to purchase insurance on the vehicle for an additional $51.00 a day!! I said “doesn’t my insurance company cover the insurance on the car since my own vehicle is in the shop” and he did not answer but began to tell me why I needed to purchase insurance, he was rather aggressive. I got stern with him right back and said loud enough for everyone in earshot to hear, ” My insurance company covers the insurance on the rental car so I don’t see a need to purchase additional insurance and it sounds like you are attempting to scam people who may not know otherwise. He got very defensive and angry and said he was just doing his job. I made everyone in the business aware to check with their insurance company before purchasing additional insurance on their rental car. So glad to see someone is doing something about it.
