Mazda class action lawsuit overview: 

  • Who: Plaintiff Matt Cauller filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America Inc. d/b/a Mazda North American Operations and Mazda Motor Corporation. 
  • Why: Cauller claims Mazda knowingly sold certain vehicles with a dangerous engine defect. 
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court. 

A new class action lawsuit alleges that Mazda knowingly exposed the purchasers of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to a dangerous engine defect. 

Plaintiff Matt Cauller’s class action lawsuit claims Mazda failed to disclose that its SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines equipped in certain of its model year 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2021-2024 Mazda3 and CX-30, 2016-2023 CX-9, 2019-2024 CX-5, and 2022-2024 CX-50 vehicles were defective. 

Cauller says the alleged engine defect causes the engine to leak coolant, which causes the engine to overheat and leads to “catastrophic engine failure.” 

“Because of the Engine Defect, Mazda’s advertising about the safety and dependability of the Class Vehicles is untrue and materially misleading,” the Mazda class action says. 

Cauller wants to represent a class of South Carolina consumers who purchased or leased in the state a class vehicle with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine. 

Mazda admits existence of engine defect, class action claims 

Mazda has admitted to the existence of the engine defect via a series of technical service bulletins, yet has failed to warn consumers, extend the vehicles’ warranty, or issue a recall, the Mazda class action alleges. 

“Mazda has long known of the Engine Defect. It has amassed years of research, data, and Engine Defect warranty claims,” the Mazda class action claims. 

Cauller claims Mazda is guilty of unjust enrichment and fraudulent omission and violating South  Carolina’s Unfair Trade Practices Act and state codes regarding breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability. 

The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages for himself and all class members. 

A group of consumers filed a separate class action lawsuit against Mazda earlier this year over claims the automaker sold certain vehicles equipped with defective infotainment systems.

    I have a 2019 Mazda CX 9 took it to a mechanic to get ready for winter driving and was then advised of the coolant leakage issue and the cost to get it repaired. I was never notified by Mazda of the know Issue , multiple class action lawsuits and that they extended the warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles . I bought the car with almost 2,000 on it. Now it has 133,000 and Mazda refuses to cover it under the warranty or even compensate for part of the repairs. It’s going to cost $6500 to fix and I still owe $7000. I will never by another Mazda again

    I purchased a 2019 Mazda Grand Touring CX9 new in 2019. I received information from Mazda that my engine head gasket could fail anytime and leak water into my engine oil-I smell antifreeze sometimes; and have to pull my dipstick and look for bubbles (water)-as directed by my Mazda dealer, Hiley Mazda in Huntsville Alabama. I never know if I should take a long trip or not-according to Mazda total engine failure has been reported on many of the 2019 Mazda CX9.
    This information is online, people have asked me about it, I my resale value bottom out. Help, stuck with this car and afraid to drive it on vacation. I am retired and cannot afford to replace an engine. It has only 70K miles

    I have a 2019 Mazda CX9 with the 2.5 skyactive engine. It started the coolant leak a few weeks ago. I called Mazda Corp yesterday and they told me to take it to the nearest Mazda dealer service. I took it in yesterday afternoon and after inspection it is leaking cooling at the top back of engine and yes it is the head gasket leaking. Please help me.

    I have a 2017 cx 9 mazda signature. I have serviced the vehicle every 5k miles. Coolant leak and now need an engine!! Mazada declinednto help pay the cost of a 11k engine.

    I have the coolant leak issue on 2019 CX-5. The leak is not coming from the pump but mechanic found dried coolant all over the place.
