Mazda class action overview:
- Who: Plaintiffs Christopher Jarvis, Christopher Bajwa, Ronald Belanger and Grant Rockwell filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America.
- Why: Several Mazda vehicles have a structural weakness that causes engine coolant leakage, overheating and catastrophic engine failure, the Mazda defect class action lawsuit says.
- Where: The Mazda class action was filed in federal court in California.
A group of consumers filed a Mazda class action lawsuit alleging an engine coolant leakage problem is present in some of the automaker’s vehicles, causing overheating and then catastrophic engine failure.
The 2019-2020 Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 along with the 2018-2020 Mazda 6 vehicles with SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines have a structural weakness at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold that causes the issue, the Mazda class action claims.
“The sudden and unexpected catastrophic engine stalling and/or failure causes the class vehicles to unexpectedly stop, posing a danger to the drivers and occupants of the class vehicles and others who share the road with them, as other vehicles can collide with the class vehicles after they suddenly stop moving,” the Mazda defect class action lawsuit says.
Mazda engine coolant leakage problem hidden by company, class action claims
The Mazda defect has been hidden by the company, which knew about the costly issues and has not been willing to pay for repairs on the class vehicles whether under warranty or not, the Mazda class action says.
With their Mazda engine coolant leakage class action, plaintiffs Christopher Jarvis, Christopher Bajwa, Ronald Belanger and Grant Rockwell are asking for damages, compensation for the diminished value of the vehicles, out-of-pocket costs, attorneys’ fees, restitution and both injunctive and declaratory relief.
The company has continued to sell the class vehicles through authorized dealers and has failed to inform vehicle owners about the defect, the Mazda class action claims.
A separate Mazda class action lawsuit from 2023 alleges that certain vehicles have defective valve stem seals that allow oil leakage that can cause “voluminous” oil consumption, putting the vehicle at an increased risk of engine failure.

Same issue. 2019 CX5 started leaking coolant at 54000 kms and Mazda is refusing to cover it. My mechanic says it’s 100 percent the same issue. Taking it to a Mazda dealership tomorrow where they will inspect it but according to Mazda it won’t be covered because Canada is not part of the class action that forced them to extend the warranty to 10 years/120000 miles. Does anyone know of a class action started here in Canada? Car has been babied, regularly maintained, always garaged and driven by a 59 year old grandmother.
I bought a Mazda cx 9 2021 brand new in about 1 month all the engine oil leak with check engine light . When I took it to Mazda dealers they told me it is because of the turbo engine that burned the oil faster that usual . I had to bring it to the dealer on multiple occasions they told me they have to continue repair and keep a record until Mazda will replace the engine . I experienced air bag sensor not working and replaced then electrical malfunction on many occasions . . I regret buying it. Please help ! ! !
I have a 2020 cx5 with the 2.5 L turbo engine and my car suddenly started leaking coolant. I took it to the Mazda dealer and they told me the cylinder head was cracked. Upon further research on my part, I discovered that there are tons of people with the same engines as me that had the same issue and the dealer refused to cover any of it and even acknowledged that it was a common issue with these specific engines in sever of their different models as well. I’m looking to see if there’s any class action suits against Mazda for this not only for this reason but also because I feel like I was swindled into an extremely expensive engine replacement. I’ve been having oil leaks since the new engine replacement and they keep telling me it’s residual oil from the engine replacement while it consistently leaks the same amount each time. While riding with the dealership employee who was test driving my car, he mentioned that I in fact had NO coolant mixed in with the oil from my last engine, which means that they could’ve potentially replaced ONLY the head instead of a complete replacement. I feel I have been extremely taken advantage of and continue to feel like my situation is being neglected and would love help with any class action suit against Mazda concerning this issue.
My mazda cx5 2015 diesel overheated with no warning resulting in a $10,000 repair bill for a complete engine change, the fact that I had no indication of a problem until it was too late and the extent of the damage was just wrong. Please provide more information regarding this problem
My 2020 cx-5 just experienced a cracked engine today. I’ve taken care of the car regularly without any issues. Saw fluid leaking and immediately brought it in to the mechanic. He says he doesn’t know how this happened!!
Mazda CX-3 2018 2.0 petrol, basically the engine has given up @ 58k, internal crack within the engine, causing coolant leakage into engine, new Engine was required, but Mazda will not fully pay for a new replacement engine even though it is was a complete engine failure without any fault/reason to why this has happened. Seems to be a well known fault with all Mazda’s, but Mazda keeping it quiet.
