Dark silver Jeep Compass - 2018 Jeep Compass

UPDATE: On July 27, 2020, the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit was dismissed.

A recent oil consumption class action lawsuit claims that the 2018 Jeep Compass consumes an excessive amount of oil.

Plaintiff Thomas Weiner says he purchased a 2018 Jeep Compass believing that the vehicle would be safe and free of defects. Unfortunately, after two years and 25,000 miles on the vehicle, Weiner allegedly started to experience stalling while operating the vehicle normally.

In September 2019, while driving to work, Weiner allegedly attempted to make a right turn but was surprised when his vehicle’s emergency brake engaged, his engine stalled and he lost the ability to accelerate. He says he had to drift his vehicle to the side of the road to avoid a collision. Allegedly, only after the engine stall did his vehicle indicate that it had critically low oil.

Later that day, Weiner’s 2018 Jeep Compass reportedly stalled once more without warning. This time, like before, the oil pressure warning light allegedly failed to engage before the stalling incident.

As a result of the stalls, Weiner claims he brought his vehicle to his dealership six times for the issue. Each time, he was allegedly forced to pay for an engine oil refill and drive another 1,000 miles to test the issue. According to the class action lawsuit, the 2018 Jeep Compass was burning through a quart of oil every 500 miles.

Engine oil cap - 2018 Jeep Compass“Plaintiff’s engine oil had descended below the threshold Defendant designates as safe, rendering his vehicle at risk of sudden engine stalling without warning,” the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

“Exacerbating the danger is the fact that Plaintiff’s Oil Pressure Warning Light and other engine oil monitors fail to engage prior to engine stalling and vehicle inoperability.”

Only on Weiner’s sixth visit to the dealership did the company authorize an engine replacement after the dealership allegedly acknowledged that the vehicle’s engine suffered from an oil consumption defect. In February, he reportedly had his engine replaced.

According to Weiner, the oil consumption defect can be traced to the engines found in some Jeep vehicles – the 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engines. A defect in these engines allegedly cause vehicles to consume oil at a “furious pace.”

The Jeep class action lawsuit argues that Weiner and other consumers have been forced to pay out of pocket for repairs and have been repeatedly inconvenienced due to the defective engines. Even worse, the defect allegedly puts drivers and passengers at risk for collisions if a vehicle stalls during normal use.

“This defect results in critically low engine oil levels, and causes vehicles installed with Defendant’s 2.4L Tigershark engines to stall and lose power without warning,” the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

Weiner seeks to represent a Class of consumers who purchased or leased vehicles equipped with a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engine. He also seeks to represent a state subclass of the same consumers from Illinois.

Due to the alleged defect in 2018 Jeep Compass vehicles and other vehicles equipped with the same engine, Weiner and other consumers have allegedly been financial damaged. The Jeep Compass class action contends that suffered damages include overpayment for vehicles, out of pocket expenses of frequent oil changes, increased service visits, costs of future repairs and diminished vehicle values.

To compensate Weiner and the proposed Class for their alleged damages, the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit seeks injunctive relief, actual damages, compensatory damages, punitive damages, interest, court costs and attorneys’ fees.

This is not the first time Fiat Chrysler has faced legal action over oil consumption in its vehicles. In last month’s legal news, plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against the company taking issue with the same Tigershark engine. In May, another class action lawsuit challenged the same issue.

Plaintiffs in these cases argued that several vehicles are equipped with the defective engine, including: 2014 – 2020 Jeep Cherokee;  2017 – 2020 Jeep Compass; 2015 – 2020 Jeep Renegade; 2015 – 2016 Chrysler 200; 2013 – 2016 Dodge Dart; and 2016 – 2020 Fiat 500X models.

Weiner and the proposed Class are represented by Steve W. Berman of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP; E. Powell Miller of The Miller Law Firm PC; and Myles McGuire, Evan M. Meyers and Timothy P. Kingsbury of McGuire Law PC.

I purchased a brand new 2017 New Jeep Compass in May 2017. The problems began almost immediately, brake- turn indicator led bulbs continually burning out, 4 dealership visits on that problem until the dealership finally removed the offending light pod with a new one 2yrs later. No engine oil light indicator on instrument panel, checked oil and was nearly 2.5qts low on oil, no warnings. Car is burning a quart of oil every 500miles. A/C problems from the get go worked fine until I needed to use it continuously then it would barely cool at the highest setting and finally stopped cooling altogether. Every time I brought the car in the damn thing would cool, the people thought I was nuts. It happened again and I hit the ceiling and threatened to call the regional service manager and low and behold they topped off the Freon and told me to drive it for a week and bring it back in for a check. To their amazement they actually found a seal leaking that they couldn’t find before, what a joke. I am still getting phantom displays about brake lights being out, and they are not, the stop-start function doesn’t work, the display says my battery isn’t strong enough to support it’s proper functionality. Quite frankly I will never consider purchasing any product coming from Fiat-Chrysler, it is all defective and doesn’t deserve to continue in business.

I had the same issue. My jeep stalled out 3x and almost got smashed from behind. I took it to the dealership 3x and they didn’t see any issue. I finally had enough and traded it in.

Bought a 17 Compass and has had a slew of problems with 50k miles on it. Dealership refuses to fix anything without paying the $120 evaluation fee. Which is a joke. Motor mounts are shot now too. I’ve only owned the car 6 months. Wife and kids stalled yesterday and that got me searching why. Had to put in 3.5 quarts of oil and couldn’t understand why there’s no light or indication of low oil. Can’t wait to sell this car.

Same oil consumption issue. Have a 2018 Jeep Compass. After 1 year of taking in for oil consumption testing, they notified me of a recall recently. Took it in for that. 3 weeks later my service engine light lit up and it was no longer drive-able. Now 2 weeks later I have it back from the dealership with a new engine. Thankfully since I bought it new it was covered under warranty. My brand new vehicle was defective when I bought it, so I’m guessing this new engine will cause the same problems. We’ll see…

2018 Jeep Compass LTD – 9 speed automatic.

Burns oil fast, has left my pregnant fiance on the side of the road twice in the last 6 months. First time the dip stick was bone dry, second time 2 litres of oil when the vehicle takes 5.5 quarts. The second occurence, no oil pressure warning, stalled in a live lane on the highway.

Also an issue with the vehicle shifting hard @2500-3000RPMs when accelerating in the 60-80km/h range.

Typical oil consumption testing from the dealer and the excessive burning deemed “normal”. The response we get for the hard shifting is “we’ll reset the computer” (3 times now).

80,000km on the vehicle and has been in the dealership for these two recurring issues 5 times now…

i bought a 2018 jeep compass latitude sept 2018. mine was running low on oil. had to drive an hour away to the dealership where i also paid for countless oil changes for them to monitor it. finally the mechanic printed out a paper how its acceptable to run low on oil… BS!!!

i have a jeep still under warranty bought new 2015 jeep renegade . It has had transmission replaced already and now the oil consumption started 6 months ago.A recall for it had it in the shop yesterday and they replaced a part. Thats a bandaid they do. But they are seeking criminal charges against them now.For knowingly putting the defective engines in and covering it up.

They are crooks, but the government lets them continue on and until they stop them , shit carsd is what we will end up paying for.

I am currently operating the 2018 Jeep Compass Longitud and am currently driving 45,000 km.
However, the engine oil was consumed so quickly that the vehicle was turned off the other day. It is only said that it is normal for a business.
The U.S. Jeep headquarters regulations say that it’s normal, but the service center has a lot of engine problems.
I went to the service center yesterday and replaced the engine oil and sealed it. I’m told to ride 3200km.
I don’t want to buy a jeep again, and my colleagues tell me to buy it.
And yet, there’s a lot of advertising. There are a lot of problems, but I think it’s really bad people who don’t have to sell a lot of cars. I live in Korea. I reported it to a consumer report center in Korea~

  9. Daniel DeOsio says:

I have this issue with my 2019 jeep cherokee. It has a high oil consumption and turns off without warning. This could cause a severe accident. My engine has already been replaced and i still have same issue. Now the dealership is stating that i need new motormounts and not willing to accept charge, when they replaced the engine less than a year ago. My vehicle only has 52,000 miles. They want to bill me over $900 for these repairs.

  10. leeyeonwoo says:

I am Korea. I also take the 2018 Jeep Compass. The engine oil burned 4000km, but the engine oil ran out and the engine turned off.
After sealing oil at the center, I told him to ride 3000km, but there was a lot less.
The head office says it is normal by regulation.

    1. Sunny says:

I have a 2018 Jeep compass trail hawk. At about 36000 milew my car would stall and emergency brake would turn on. Dealership told me to check it every thousand miles which I do. Its currently at 44600 miles, I’m about 500 miles into an oil change and already a quart low. Living whare temperature drops well below zero I do not need my vehicle dying.

      1. Dawn says:

There is a recall I just had mine fixed today, And it cost you nothing it’s for the oil consumption
