Dark silver Jeep Compass - 2018 Jeep Compass

UPDATE: On July 27, 2020, the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit was dismissed.

A recent oil consumption class action lawsuit claims that the 2018 Jeep Compass consumes an excessive amount of oil.

Plaintiff Thomas Weiner says he purchased a 2018 Jeep Compass believing that the vehicle would be safe and free of defects. Unfortunately, after two years and 25,000 miles on the vehicle, Weiner allegedly started to experience stalling while operating the vehicle normally.

In September 2019, while driving to work, Weiner allegedly attempted to make a right turn but was surprised when his vehicle’s emergency brake engaged, his engine stalled and he lost the ability to accelerate. He says he had to drift his vehicle to the side of the road to avoid a collision. Allegedly, only after the engine stall did his vehicle indicate that it had critically low oil.

Later that day, Weiner’s 2018 Jeep Compass reportedly stalled once more without warning. This time, like before, the oil pressure warning light allegedly failed to engage before the stalling incident.

As a result of the stalls, Weiner claims he brought his vehicle to his dealership six times for the issue. Each time, he was allegedly forced to pay for an engine oil refill and drive another 1,000 miles to test the issue. According to the class action lawsuit, the 2018 Jeep Compass was burning through a quart of oil every 500 miles.

Engine oil cap - 2018 Jeep Compass“Plaintiff’s engine oil had descended below the threshold Defendant designates as safe, rendering his vehicle at risk of sudden engine stalling without warning,” the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

“Exacerbating the danger is the fact that Plaintiff’s Oil Pressure Warning Light and other engine oil monitors fail to engage prior to engine stalling and vehicle inoperability.”

Only on Weiner’s sixth visit to the dealership did the company authorize an engine replacement after the dealership allegedly acknowledged that the vehicle’s engine suffered from an oil consumption defect. In February, he reportedly had his engine replaced.

According to Weiner, the oil consumption defect can be traced to the engines found in some Jeep vehicles – the 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engines. A defect in these engines allegedly cause vehicles to consume oil at a “furious pace.”

The Jeep class action lawsuit argues that Weiner and other consumers have been forced to pay out of pocket for repairs and have been repeatedly inconvenienced due to the defective engines. Even worse, the defect allegedly puts drivers and passengers at risk for collisions if a vehicle stalls during normal use.

“This defect results in critically low engine oil levels, and causes vehicles installed with Defendant’s 2.4L Tigershark engines to stall and lose power without warning,” the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

Weiner seeks to represent a Class of consumers who purchased or leased vehicles equipped with a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engine. He also seeks to represent a state subclass of the same consumers from Illinois.

Due to the alleged defect in 2018 Jeep Compass vehicles and other vehicles equipped with the same engine, Weiner and other consumers have allegedly been financial damaged. The Jeep Compass class action contends that suffered damages include overpayment for vehicles, out of pocket expenses of frequent oil changes, increased service visits, costs of future repairs and diminished vehicle values.

To compensate Weiner and the proposed Class for their alleged damages, the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit seeks injunctive relief, actual damages, compensatory damages, punitive damages, interest, court costs and attorneys’ fees.

This is not the first time Fiat Chrysler has faced legal action over oil consumption in its vehicles. In last month’s legal news, plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against the company taking issue with the same Tigershark engine. In May, another class action lawsuit challenged the same issue.

Plaintiffs in these cases argued that several vehicles are equipped with the defective engine, including: 2014 – 2020 Jeep Cherokee;  2017 – 2020 Jeep Compass; 2015 – 2020 Jeep Renegade; 2015 – 2016 Chrysler 200; 2013 – 2016 Dodge Dart; and 2016 – 2020 Fiat 500X models.

I have a 2018 Jeep Compass with the 2.4 liter engine. I haven’t had any issues up till recently the auto stop-start warning light came on. I took it to the dealership to have it checked out and they said it was the battery. When I had the battery checked they diagnosed the oil was low and it required an oil change when an oil change was not due. They said that the car warning light came on because the engine oil was critically low. They also tried to convince me to purchase two new batteries at approximately $630 plus labor and diagnostic fees. I went to a non Mopar shop and had my oil changed and then my battery checked were they diagnosed my batteries were perfectly fine but they did tell me about the trouble with this Jeep engine burning through oil excessively. I did a Google Search and found this site. If there is a class action lawsuit I definitely want to get my name on the list as I am experiencing the same issue and can foresee that it will continue until I get rid of this car.

I leased my Jeep on 6/1/2018. On 6/30/2018 the jeep overheated and I had to pull over. Long story short the upper radiator hose was leaking replaced hose.

10/16/2020 I was driving my jeep and the vehicles just stopped I pulled over quickly. I was happy I was able to get to the side of the road. I called the dealer they suggested I check the oil. I brought the car to a gas station. There was no oil! The Gas Station attendant added 31/2 quarts of oil. I was in disbelief I always bring my cars in for oil changes regularly. When I brought my Jeep in for service they told me they were going to initialize an oil consumption test to have RHD check the oil level after 1000 miles. I was very upset when my bill came to $281.12 for service that day. I have the invoice if needed. When I went in for my oil consumption test appointment on 11/20/2020. The man behind the counter was trying to get me to leave once I told him I had an appointment. The test showed that my oil was still reading full at that time. I asked is this going to happen again the man said well with that engine you never know. So at this point, I feel very unsafe in my car and cannot wait till the end of my lease. And why would I have to pay for service on a leased car that is having this kind of problem? Signed very very frustrated with my jeep choice!!

I have had several close calls as my vehicle has shut off on the highway and I thought I was going to be hit and killed by another vehicle coming behind me. I am fearful every day with this Jeep and dealership has done nothing to help.

  4. Angela Carver says:

Same issue for me. I had my oil changed and a couple thousand km after my oil light was on and my jeep was stalling. I brought it to the dealership and they were growling at me about not checking my oil. I was not pleased……I informed them that i did not feel I should need to check my oil every week. It’s not like my vehicle was a 1990…..

I’m having the same issues as everyone. I purchased an used 2018 (500 miles) Jeep Compass Latitude. I have put
21, 000 miles on it and 5 days ago I was driving down the freeway on a busy intersection and the vehicle stalled. It was not until I was able to get the vehicle started again that it quickly flashed my oil light and indicated low oil pressure. God saved my life 2 times, this is the second time it happened to me on the freeway. Also, I took my car 6 months ago with the same issues and now this happened again. This car had shown problems just 3 months after I bought it. I’m so frustrated. The dealership wants me to drive 15,000 more miles to make a test before they call it a recall.

Just bought a 2015 Jeep Cherokee for my daughter in September 2020 and had an oil change performed at that time. In Dec 2020 the car started have issues where it would just die at a stop light or stop sign (in traffic). Took it to the mechanic and found it was down over 3 quarts of oil. In a little over 5,000 miles the car had used over half of the six quarts of oil added at the time of the oil change. I guess we will have to buy extra oil to keep in the back of the car and check the dipstick once a month.

Need to recall 2018 Jeep Compass have to put a quart of oil in it every 1000 miles What a piece if shit

  8. Andrea Dalzell says:

I purchased a 2018 Jeep Compass Latitude new. It now has 37,000 miles on it and yesterday I was driving down the road on a busy intersection and the vehicle stalled. It was not until I was able to get the vehicle started again that it quickly flashed my oil light and indicated low oil pressure. I called the dealership and they had me come in and they topped off my oil and sent me on my way with a upcoming appointment to reprogram the vehicle and give it an update.

I have experienced nothing but problems with this vehicle and am so disappointed with the dealership, the service center and Chrysler. I have asked for help since purchase and my concerns have went unheard and unaddressed.

  9. Shannon says:

I purchased a Demo 2018 Jeep Compass in May/June 2019 and have same excessive oil consumption issues. How do I join Class Action or request resolution BEFORE I have serous incident or Engine dies? I still have some warranty left thru Jan 2022

  10. Theresa Grela says:

I bought a 2018 jeep compass with 12000 miles in March 2019. Car stalled multiple times with my great nieces in the car with me. I tookto dealer and had to go in every 1000 miles for consumption test. After 2nd time they told me I needed a new engine. Engine replaced December 2019. Today I took car in for recall. This was the worst purchase I ever made. No one seems to want yo assist with all issues, cause the car still stalls after new engine
