Dark silver Jeep Compass - 2018 Jeep Compass

UPDATE: On July 27, 2020, the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit was dismissed.

A recent oil consumption class action lawsuit claims that the 2018 Jeep Compass consumes an excessive amount of oil.

Plaintiff Thomas Weiner says he purchased a 2018 Jeep Compass believing that the vehicle would be safe and free of defects. Unfortunately, after two years and 25,000 miles on the vehicle, Weiner allegedly started to experience stalling while operating the vehicle normally.

In September 2019, while driving to work, Weiner allegedly attempted to make a right turn but was surprised when his vehicle’s emergency brake engaged, his engine stalled and he lost the ability to accelerate. He says he had to drift his vehicle to the side of the road to avoid a collision. Allegedly, only after the engine stall did his vehicle indicate that it had critically low oil.

Later that day, Weiner’s 2018 Jeep Compass reportedly stalled once more without warning. This time, like before, the oil pressure warning light allegedly failed to engage before the stalling incident.

As a result of the stalls, Weiner claims he brought his vehicle to his dealership six times for the issue. Each time, he was allegedly forced to pay for an engine oil refill and drive another 1,000 miles to test the issue. According to the class action lawsuit, the 2018 Jeep Compass was burning through a quart of oil every 500 miles.

Engine oil cap - 2018 Jeep Compass“Plaintiff’s engine oil had descended below the threshold Defendant designates as safe, rendering his vehicle at risk of sudden engine stalling without warning,” the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

“Exacerbating the danger is the fact that Plaintiff’s Oil Pressure Warning Light and other engine oil monitors fail to engage prior to engine stalling and vehicle inoperability.”

Only on Weiner’s sixth visit to the dealership did the company authorize an engine replacement after the dealership allegedly acknowledged that the vehicle’s engine suffered from an oil consumption defect. In February, he reportedly had his engine replaced.

According to Weiner, the oil consumption defect can be traced to the engines found in some Jeep vehicles – the 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engines. A defect in these engines allegedly cause vehicles to consume oil at a “furious pace.”

The Jeep class action lawsuit argues that Weiner and other consumers have been forced to pay out of pocket for repairs and have been repeatedly inconvenienced due to the defective engines. Even worse, the defect allegedly puts drivers and passengers at risk for collisions if a vehicle stalls during normal use.

“This defect results in critically low engine oil levels, and causes vehicles installed with Defendant’s 2.4L Tigershark engines to stall and lose power without warning,” the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

Weiner seeks to represent a Class of consumers who purchased or leased vehicles equipped with a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engine. He also seeks to represent a state subclass of the same consumers from Illinois.

Due to the alleged defect in 2018 Jeep Compass vehicles and other vehicles equipped with the same engine, Weiner and other consumers have allegedly been financial damaged. The Jeep Compass class action contends that suffered damages include overpayment for vehicles, out of pocket expenses of frequent oil changes, increased service visits, costs of future repairs and diminished vehicle values.

To compensate Weiner and the proposed Class for their alleged damages, the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit seeks injunctive relief, actual damages, compensatory damages, punitive damages, interest, court costs and attorneys’ fees.

This is not the first time Fiat Chrysler has faced legal action over oil consumption in its vehicles. In last month’s legal news, plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against the company taking issue with the same Tigershark engine. In May, another class action lawsuit challenged the same issue.

Plaintiffs in these cases argued that several vehicles are equipped with the defective engine, including: 2014 – 2020 Jeep Cherokee;  2017 – 2020 Jeep Compass; 2015 – 2020 Jeep Renegade; 2015 – 2016 Chrysler 200; 2013 – 2016 Dodge Dart; and 2016 – 2020 Fiat 500X models.

My daughter has the 2.4 liter motor in her 2018 jeep compass it is also consuming extremely large amounts of oil as well. Could you please advise on the necessary steps to either get repaired or join in on the class action law suit. The car has 46,000 miles.

I purchased a 2018 compass new off the lot and I am having the same problem. The car is burning oil! They did the recall and insist it is fixed even though it still is burning about 1/3 quart after 1,500 miles. I have had 3 oil consumption tests and all 3 showed burning oil!

I purchased my 2018 Jeep compass Jan 2021. It had 40,000 miles on it and I was told it was a leased vehicle that was only driven 1 year. Yesterday I stopped at a red light. The auto stop engaged but when I went to drive it stalled and the emergency brake light came on. It took a good 5 minutes to get it started. This morning I was driving to work when my Jeep stalled. I pulled over and again the emergency brake came on. I tried several times to restart it. It had to be towed. I was told that even though Carmax changed my oil when I bought it in January I had no oil in my car. There was no warning. No light no nothing. It just died while I was driving. I was so scared. I’m still scared. I have 9 Grandkids that get into my vehicle. I am so scared that it will happen again on the highway. As of right now my 2nd car payment was paid today and my jeep sits at the dealership. I want to cry.

March 10, 2021…..I am having the exact same issues as noted above. My vehicle stalled on 3 separate occasions in intersections and struggled to restart. I went back to the dealer this morning and was told because it only burned 1/2 litre in 2000 kms it is within normal operating range. I called Chrysler and was told to monitor and take pics for 2400 Ins everyday. Are you kidding me??? Need some help with this.

I have a 2018 Jeep Compass that I purchased 1 year ago. I have almost been hit by another car when my Jeep stalled while crossing lanes and had trouble getting it started again.. I had a Jeep consumption test done and told that after 1300 miles I was down 1/2 quart and told instead of going another 1000 miles ; go 700 didn’t think it was safe to go 1000 usually required. After 700 miles total 2000 miles I was down a quart and according to Jeep this is exceptable?.???? See you next oil change…. no thanks

In July 2020 I purchased a 2018 jeep compass from a Carmax dealership in the Chicagoland area. It had 17,500 miles on it. It now has 26,300 miles on it and I am having the exact exact same problems the that Mr. Weiner is having. It originally started as the car stalling out at stop lights, unable to accelerate, and the oil pressure light coming on. After taking it into my local workshop they noted that the oil was down 2 quarts. This was sooner than the normal a lot of time at the oil Should’ve been changed. I am now taking it into the dealership and seeing what they will do about this. My question is has there been any results from the class action lawsuit and what is Jeep doing to compensate its customers.

  10. Taylor Paquette says:

I have a 2018 Jeep Compass that I purchased in April of 2020. I got the oil changed regularly with in the past 9 months that I’ve owned it. In January of 2021 I was driving it home (NY to VT) and was in the middle of a round about in Saratoga,NY. Then, all of the sudden my car stalled as I went to accelerate. I had to put my car in park, turn it off, and turn in back on. Mind you I was still in the middle of a round about. Luckily, I was able to make it out of the round about safely without getting into a major accident, I was able to pull off to the side of the road. My car didn’t have any indicator lights on, indicating that my oil was low. I had to get my car towed to the nearest Jeep dealership, as roadside assistance wouldn’t tow my Jeep to the dealership I had purchased the car from (Goss) or a dealership where I am currently living (Westchester, NY). Nemar Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge of Saratoga have had my car for over a month (at the time I’m writing this). Nemar told me they needed to replace my spark plugs after running a diagnostics and inspecting the car. After replacing the spark plugs they called me and informed me that my car was still stalling. They just informed me this week (February 19, 2021) that my engine needs to be replaced but they are checking to see if it is covered under warranty. I have two warranties currently on my car and haven’t even had it for a year. Now, I am playing a waiting game and paying a car payment for a car that I don’t have in my possession. Nemar hasn’t offered me a courtesy car as of today (Feb, 20,2021) Therefore, I have had to pay out of pocket to borrow a family member’s car. I have had multiple conversations with John, the case manager, from Jeep customer service
