Honda turbo direct injection engine class action overview:ย

  • Who: Two Honda drivers are suing the automaker.ย
  • Why: The plaintiffs say some Honda Civics, CR-Vs and Accords suffer from a defective turbo direct engine.ย
  • Where: The Honda turbo direct injection engine class action was filed in an Illinois federal court.

Honda equipped some of its Honda Civics, CR-Vs and Accords with a defective turbo direct engine that can cause catastrophic engine failure, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiffs Eliyahu Wolf and Miranda Phelps filed the class action complaint against American Honda Motor Co. Inc Oct. 24 in an Illinois federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.ย

According to the lawsuit, some of Hondaโ€™s vehiclesโ€”including model years 2019-2023 Honda CR-V, 2019-2022 Honda Civic, and 2018-2022 Honda Accord vehiclesโ€”are equipped with Hondaโ€™s 1.5-liter turbo direct injection engine.

The lawsuit alleges that Honda markets its 1.5-liter turbo direct injection engines in a manner to convince customers that they are buying a revolutionary product of the highest quality specifically aimed at power, efficiency, and reliability.ย

โ€œBut with those promises came a series of problems for Class Vehicle owners that Honda actively concealed,โ€ the plaintiffs say.

Hondaโ€™s 1.5-liter turbo direct injection engine suffers from a latent defect, lawsuit alleges

The engines suffer from a defect that caused fuel to contaminate and dilute the engine oil, resulting in โ€œscores of issues,โ€ including unlubricated engine components, reduced engine efficiency, excess engine wear, increased upkeep and repair costs, noxious gasoline fumes, and in the worst cases, catastrophic engine failure and stalling while driving, the lawsuit alleges.

Without a lubricated engine, the sliding parts of the engine that come together at high speeds to power a vehicle will produce a lot of friction and ultimately lead to premature wear, the plaintiffs say.

Compounding damage caused by the defect manifests itself over time, and is often only discovered by vehicle owners long after the warranty period expires, the Honda lawsuit states.

โ€œAs a result of the Defect, Class Vehicle owners are often being required to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for replacement engine parts, repairs, and frequent oil changes,โ€ the plaintiffs say. They allege that Honda knew about the defect, but concealed it.

The plaintiffs are looking to represent anyone in the United States who purchased or leased a model year 2019-2023 Honda CR-V, 2019-2022 Honda Civic, and 2018-2022 Honda Accord vehicle equipped with a 1.5- liter turbo direct injection engine, as well as Illinois and Minnesota classes.

They are suing for breach of warranty, unjust enrichment, fraudulent concealment and violation of state consumer laws, and seeking certification of the class action, extensions of their warranties, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.ย

Earlier this month, Honda was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging it sold 2016-2020 Honda Civic vehicles equipped with a faulty infotainment system.

The plaintiffs are represented by Elizabeth A. Fegan, Jonathan D. Lindenfeld and Brooke A. Achua of Fegan Scott LLC, David Freydin of Law Offices of David Freydin and J. Barton Goplerud of Shindler, Anderson, Goplerud & Weese, PC.

The Honda class action lawsuit is Eliyahu Wolf et al., v. American Honda Motors Co Inc, Case No. 1:22-cv-05855 in the U.S. District Court Northern District of Illinois.

have a 2018 Honda CRV and last summer our fuel injectors went and we had to wait 4 months for the part ( which is absurd as we had to keep changing the oil ) . Honda seemed to not care at all. Cost us $2600. Just recently our turbo blew on the same car and our mechanic said they are directly related and Honda is still no help. our mechanic said it may lead to engine problems. I can;t believe how bad this issue is and how Honda is being rudely non compromising . Very frustrated and definetly done with our 50 years of Hondas

2019 Honda Accord 68k. Catastrophic Engine Failure and The Honda Dealer I purchased the car from and had repairs done at refuses to acknowledge any claims of these issues. Paid out of pocket for engine replacement and then was harassed by email from the service advisor for his poor scores on post service survey. Honda needs to do better.

I have a 2018 Accord 1.5 turbo. At 101,800 miles started having rough starts but ran ok. After a week the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree ! Every single warning light and message was flashing. Car idled very rough and would not accelerate.Had car towed to dealership only to be told l had a misfire caused by coolant leaking into cylinder 3 and 4 which caused a blown Head Gasket. Cost $5700.00 .

I have a 2018 Honda Accord Sport 1.5. I bought it used and it had only 14.000 miles on it when I bought it in 2019 from a certified Honda Dealership. Iโ€™ve always gotten my services at the due dates. The car drove live dream machine for a year and a half or two. I paid it off in 2021 and the the problems started which was ironically a few months after my warranty ended. The first is was a rough start which at around 77,000 miles. I took it in to the local dealer and l had bad plugs, atleast thatโ€™s what I was told and about 1 hour later I was advised that I had a leak on my manifold gasket. I paid for all repairs $2600.00. July 2022, the same similar issues with the rough start. I took it back in and I was told this time that my fuel injector was bad. I paid for that to be replaced. Costed me about 2000.00. November 2023, rough start bad shake, cutting off in traffic. I took it to the dealer again and this time my turbo booster had gone bad, got that replaced at 2300.00. I began having the same shaky start ups and cutting out while driving almost like a skip. This time I was told that I had a blown head gasket! Cost 4058.00!! How is this possible?? No way, never ran hot, never any low coolant indicators or anything. My car was running fine, Iโ€™m a slow driver, never ever revving it up or fast crazy driving. This is absolutely bizarre, Honda has lost their minds, who has money to continue to keep patching at their defects that keeps popping up every 6 months to a year. Iโ€™m not rich by no stretch of imagination and even if I were, I certainly could find better things to do with my hard earned money. I was advised to get an engine compression test to be certain because I donโ€™t trust Honda. Iโ€™ve already been charged for an oil change that they didnโ€™t perform. They shouldnโ€™t even want this rep as many years as consumers have supported what use to be such a reputable brand name. Iโ€™m devasted, this is my only means of transportation and I donโ€™t have the funds to repair it. Iโ€™ve reached out to Honda of America for assistance with repairing and im awaiting a decision. If their decision is not doable, Iโ€™m filing a lawsuit against them and Iโ€™m really considering even if they rule on my favor.๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ˜ก

I have a 1.5 turbo 2019 Honda accord. Head gaskets are blowing, oil dilution, fuel injectors going bad. This problem needs to be rectified by Honda. What was once one of the most reliable cars is now one of the most unreliable cars. I have owned tons of Honda Accords all the way back to 1988. Itโ€™s time for Honda to step up and fix these problems. My car is currently paid off and Iโ€™m not looking to have to replace it due to so many problems. There will be no resale on these cars due to all the problems. They sold millions of these knowing they had these problems.

  6. Dani Dodson says:

2016 honda ex 1.5 turbo. Fixed once supposedlyโ€ฆ Then I was told itโ€™s fuel in the oil again. I bought the car new. Itโ€™s a joke. They do try to sell you a turbo etc. my dad is ASE Certified mechanic and he called them out. He told them the cause is a problem with Honda that knew about the problem.

  7. Whitney says:

2019 crv turbo 1.5L 71,000 miles. Sitting at the dealer now with a seized engine and sludged turbo. According to them, we were supposed to change the oil more often than when the manual says and because we didnโ€™t use their services to do it, oh well! They actually stated the โ€œoil dilutionโ€ problem as if it is common knowledge and we should just know better. We bought the car new in 2019! There were no recalls, no communication about it at all. We are gutted!!!!

  8. Glenda Davis says:

Everything mentioned above happened with my car Honda Accord Sport 2.0. I eventually didnโ€™t feel safe driving it because it stalled in the middle of me driving 55mph. Scariest thing in the world. I changed it out for a 2023 that doesnโ€™t seem to be any better.

  9. Wendy Nichols says:

i have a 2018 Honda Accord Touring 1.5 Turbo and i was on my way from my daughters volleyball game when all lights lit up on my dash and it would not go anywhere when I pressed the gas. I coasted off the road and turned my car off and waited a few minutes and then turned it back on and it was good rest of way home. a few days later same thing happened and lights will not go off and my car does not run correctly. I have taken it to 2 honda dealerships and one of them tells me i need to replace my turbo, spark plugs, and head gasket and then the honda dealership tells me i need to replace my turbo that they canโ€™t find anything wrong with my head gasket. I donโ€™t understand why 2 Honda dealerships can not come up with the same problem and here I am going between the two trying to figure out which one is telling the truth and without my vehicle.

  10. Joncarlos Fernandez says:

2018 Honda Accord Touring 1.5. on my way to take my son to school all the warning lights came on on my dashboard, then the car went into a limp mode, pulled over to the shoulder turned the car off and on and the limp mode went away but the all the lights on the dashboard stayed on. got home disconnected the battery terminals and cleaned them, all lights went away for 2 days and came back, limp mode comes back every time I go over 2,500 RPM give or take. of course my warranty expired at the 3 year mark. Iโ€™ve been reading a lot online and it seems to be a huge problem with oil dilution on 1.5 engines. I still owe 10,000 dollars on this car, Totally screwed.
