Ford Motor Co. has recalled certain model year 2022-2024 Ford Maverick vehicles due an issue with the rearview camera image.
The recall was announced on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Sept. 13. It applies to 144,516 model year 2022-2024 Ford Maverick vehicles equipped with Connected Touch Radios (CTR).
According to the recall, the rearview camera image may freeze when the vehicle is in reverse.
This can result in a “false representation of where the vehicle is relative to its surroundings, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall says.
The issue is caused by improper memory handling within the CTR software, the company said. The defect is causing a component in the end-to-end image processing path to fail.
Two accidents reported
Ford is aware of four warranty claims and 22 complaints of a frozen rear view camera image in North America, it said.
The first known report of a frozen rear camera image was received on April 4, 2022, the automaker added. Ford said it is aware of two reports of accidents and no injuries related to the issue.
Dealers will update the software free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Sept. 30, 2024, Ford said.
Earlier this month, Ford recalled specific 2021-2022 vehicles equipped with the 2.7-liter or 3.0-liter Nano EcoBoost engine, because the engine may contain an intake valve that has the propensity to break, resulting in catastrophic engine failure and an immediate loss of power.
