Auto manufacturing giant General Motors has issued hundreds of recalls for millions of vehicles in the last two years, including a Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag recall.
Most notably, GM faced perhaps one of the largest recalls in the company’s history in 2014, when it recalled about 2.6 million vehicles over an ignition switch defect.
In addition to the ignition switch defect, GM also issued a separate Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag recall.
Chevy Cobalt Side-Impact Airbag Recall
In August 2015, General Motors issued a Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag recall for certain units of its Chevrolet Cobalt sedans to fix an issue that could prevent an airbag from deploying in a crash.
More specifically, GM said the Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag recall issue is related to the sensor wire harness routing in the left front door.
When improperly routed, the window regulator could contact the harness when the window is fully lowered and over time chafe the harness insulation. That could result in a short circuit, preventing the driver side roof rail air bag from deploying during a crash.
GM said the warning light would display that the air bag was malfunctioning before a crash.
The hazards, according to the Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag recall notice, was that the misrouted wiring harness and resulting short circuit could disable the driver side curtain air bag from deploying during an accident.
GM said that it has a report of one injury and crash related to the issue.
The vehicles in the Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag recall are the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt Sedan manufactured between January 4, 2010, to June 23, 2010.
According to reports, there are 73,000 vehicles (60,000 in the United States and 13,000 in Canada) that are affected by the Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag recall.
It is important to note that this Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag recall is not related to GM’s 2014 recall of 2.6 million vehicles, including the 2005-2010 Cobalt, for defective ignition switches, which are linked to nearly 400 deaths and injuries.
That ignition switch call back is associated with faulty ignition switches that could be accidentally moved to the off or accessory modes, resulting in the air bags failing to deploy in a crash.
Still, the number of vehicles GM has recalled in 2015 has fallen sharply. In 2015, GM recalled 2.2 million vehicles in 26 campaigns. By contrast, GM recalled 27 million vehicles in the United States in 2014 in a total of 84 recall announcements.
Filing a GM Recall Defects Lawsuit
Over the past decade, over 400 deaths have been tied to the safety defects of GM vehicles.
Individuals who owned or leased a 2000 year or later model Chevy Cobalt and were injured or hospitalized as a result of the GM side airbag defect may be entitled to compensation for pain or suffering.
Filing a GM recall lawsuit is a complex process, however. For instance, a victim of Chevy Cobalt side-impact airbag failure or problem must prove that the airbag defect was the cause of the accident and that the injuries suffered were a direct result of that crash.
