Traeger wood pellets being used in smokerA class action lawsuit alleges that Traeger Pellet Grills LLC sells cheap wood pellets infused with oils, passing them off as more expensive woods prized in grilling.

Plaintiff Michael Yates says he purchased Traeger wood pellets for grilling and discovered that the pellets were not actually made of the wood advertised.

Yates says that he is an enthusiastic amateur griller who carefully selects the wood with which he grills. He states that the different woods provide his food with different flavors.

According to Yates, he purchased both the Texas Beef Blend Pellets and the Mesquite BBQ Wood Pellets on multiple occasions.

The Traeger Grill class action states that the advertisements expressed that the Mesquite BBQ pellets were composed of 100 percent mesquite wood and the Texas Beef Blend Pellets also contained real mesquite wood.

However, Yates claims that when he grilled with the Mesquite BBQ Wood Pellets and the Texas Beef Blend Pellets, the flavor did not reflect mesquite wood.

He says that he then called Traeger’s customers service to inquire about the wood, at which point he was told that the Mesquite pellets were actually comprised of 100 percent alder or oak and no mesquite wood, and that mesquite oil was added to those woods to flavor them.

The Traeger wood pellets class action lawsuit alleges that Traeger misrepresents the type of wood in many of its pellet varieties. The plaintiff claims that the company uses less expensive woods in place of more expensive woods and uses oils to make the woods smell like their more expensive counterparts.

The Traeger mesquite wood pellets class action lawsuit explains that wood pellets are used in the grilling process to give the meat being grilled a certain smokey flavor. Allegedly, grilling has become more popular in the last decade and an industry has sprung up around this popularity.

Wood pellets are reportedly used in more luxury grilling and are sought after by grillers. The Traeger false advertising class action lawsuit notes that for many people passionate about grilling, the type of pellets that they use are essential because different types of wood imparts different flavors.

As a result, many grillers are allegedly willing to pay a premium for high quality, grilling wood pellets. Traeger reportedly is aware of this preference and exploits customers’ preference for high-quality wood in the interest of its profits.

The Traeger pellet class action lawsuit says that Traeger knew customers had no choice but to rely on the advertisements and labeling of the wood pellets and intentionally sold customers a lower-quality product than what was advertised.

Yates is represented by Jared D. Scott and Heather M. Sneddon of Anderson & Karrenberg; and by Karl S. Kronenberger, Jeffery M. Rosenfeld, and Liana W. Chen of Kronenberger Rosenfeld LLP.

The Traeger Grilling Pellets Class Action Lawsuit is Michael Yates v. Traeger Pellet Grills LLC, Case No. 2:19-cv-00723-DBP, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.

UPDATE: On Jan. 23, 2020, Traeger Pellet Grills asked a judge to dismiss a class action lawsuit claiming that the company misrepresents its wood pellets as expensive mesquite grilling woods when in reality, they are 100 percent alder or oak with mesquite oil flavoring added.

Just bought a Traeger and a whole bunch of pellets. Many different kinds since they were a good price. Having problems with the Traeger where I can’t get it to go down low enough to smoke! Dealing with them bu getting nowhere. So disappointed. When I did research on it I find we are not the only ones! Maybe I need to start a class action on this!

I can understand that some people may be frustrated by this because it is misleading in the way the company labels their products. The person states that they are trying to take their “grilling to the next level”. If he would of done a little research he would have discovered that a lot of wood pellet brands are not always using the same wood that they label on their product. I became aware of this when I started looking at pellet grills and I’m just a backyard griller.

Here is an example of another company that offers pellets. Lumberjack pellets state “100% cherry wood.” which contains all cherry wood however their less premium product just called “cherry” uses a mix. Nothing new here folks. Do your research if it is that important to you and you will discover that there other options and varying degrees of quaility just like any other product that is offered on the market.

My brother and I were just talking about this maybe two weeks ago. We’re talking about are we use the same multi wood generic pellets, we were laughing because we were both spending way too much money and traeger pellets and couldn’t taste the difference. My brother has a wholesale account is able to buy a generic multi wood multi blend whatever you want to call it pellet, 40 lb bags under $10. Anyway my brother and I will have a good laugh tomorrow cuz we thought we were just inexperienced and an untrained palate to determine the difference in flavors of a cherry or oak, LOL. Let me know when there’s a class action lawsuit on traeger for the timberline 850 series. -18 months old and has been down for the last 2 and 1/2 months, keep getting the runaround from traeger anyway I regress

  • Tony October 24, 2019

We just got our Traeger and realized afterward that they’re selling discontinued models at Costco and we got one without WiFire (which has been standard since March 2019.) This explains a lot. I have often suspected that they added something to their pellets to make them smell stronger. I actually suspected them of using more sapwood than heartwood in the manufacturing process which would make a more resin infused pellet. But extracted oils makes sense. And it’s an interesting business model. Make cheap wood smell more expensive and then tell customers they cannot burn any other brand of pellet in a treager grill otherwise it voids the warranty. And all the while they pocket the extra cash.

I have another brand of pellet grill but have purchased treager pellets in the past just for the extra aroma. I won’t be purchasing them any more. And I’ll be following this case closely.

Ran across this suit online and read you are seeking other folks who bought Traeger pellets thinking I was getting different woods, not wood flavored with oil.

I’ve owned a pellet smoker since spring of 2014 (RecTec Model 680). I’ve probably purchased about 10 bags of Mesquite Traeger pellets in the past four years from Walmart and Home Depot. I no longer have receipts or any Traeger pellets.

Aside from fraud, are there any potential health issues from the oils used? Could use of these pellets damage my smoker?

This is not new information. We’ve known for years that Traeger pellets were made of Alder and essential oils of the woods. The bigger issue is whether the Traeger grills are really even smokers. Above 150°F, the smoke stops and the grills become wood fueled convection ovens. that’s probably the reason that Mr. Yates doesn’t taste Mesquite. Surely there are more important lawsuits to file. This is frivolous and I hope that the judge dismisses the case on those grounds. Sure I’d like to receive a few bucks for the many bags of these pellets I’ve purchased, but does it really merit a class action? Maybe Traeger can send Mr. Yates a refund.

Yes! We have a Traeger smoker and use it on all different kinds of meats to achieve just the right flavour profile once the meat is cooked. I am terribly disappointed, especially when we pay Traeger’s premium prices for pellets when there are alternatives costing a quarter the costs.

This explains the NON smokey taste on the meat…You smoke meat for HOURS and nothing….Back to the old fashioned grill

  • Christine Miille October 8, 2019

I’ve been purchasing traeger pellets since I purchased my traeger. I was under the impression that traeger pellets should be used only. Hope these oils aren’t harmful.

  • Melody Hackett October 8, 2019

I have purchased these pellets on many many occasions. I am very interested in being added. Traeger states you should use their pellets now this comes to light. Very upsetting.

  • Denis Kolesnikov October 8, 2019

I Have bought at least 10+ bags of these because they also suggest using their pellets for their grills.

If this is lawsuit finds that they indeed use oils, I will never purchase Traeger again.

I feel totally taken advantage of and this is theft. I do not waist the difference but because of all that they claim my husband buys it. wrong in all ways.

  • Lisa Galati October 8, 2019

  • Phillip Peters October 8, 2019

definitely count me in, disappointed we were highly mislead and basically told we could only use their pellets. I have since switched to Pit Boss pellets but now might have to dig into that since the previous owners of Traeger are now at Pit Boss as well as other employees of Traeger.
My Texas controller just went out and they want twice as much for the controller then what i can get on Amazon. Love my smoker but not willing to pay their cost again for a new one.

  • K Kaser October 8, 2019

Not too happy to find out I have been a lot more for a lot less. We also use Traeger pellets exclusively and have been doing so since 2012. The only good thing about this story is that at least my salmon is truly alder smoked…probably.

  • HeyBud October 8, 2019

Very disappointed to learn about this. I currently have six different flavors (or so I thought!) of Traeger Pellets in tightly sealed five-gallon pails (bought at extra expense just to store the Traeger Pellets) in my garage. I have been “Traegering” since June of 2018 and have exclusively purchased the Traeger brand pellets and could have most likely spent considerably less on different brands for the same or better quality. I’m in on the Class Action if it gets some traction!

  • Nicole Stanley October 8, 2019

Add me please. We’ve used these pellets many times!

  • Rhonda Stahl October 8, 2019

Please add me, Traeger has been quite adamant that only Traeger pellets are used in Traeger grills. Which I did for the first few years until I found a competitor who’s brand made me anxiously venture away from the Traeger brand.

  • Denise Owens October 8, 2019

Absolutely add me to this class action suit.

  • Denise Owens October 8, 2019

Have used Traeger Pellets in competitions based on their promises of the flavors. Very disappointed in how it made the meats tasted. So much in fact, that I began purchasing pellets from other companies. Very disappointed in Traeger!!!!!

    • Dan Mills October 9, 2019

Please include me. Would not have purchased pellets that were “flavored”. My apple pellets should be made from apple trees. Stores sell wood for charcoal grilling. This feels like a cost cutting method and deceptive business practices.

  • CW October 8, 2019

  • Chris Levins October 8, 2019

  • Mervin Harbold Jr October 8, 2019

I’ve been a Traeger Grill owner for over 25 years, it’s a shame they have cheapened their brand name with this tactic. With the price the pellets sale for, I’m sure they could have used traditional wood products and continued to make a profit. Greed!
    Please add me.

  • karl alar October 8, 2019

Add me to the class action suit.
I have bought several bags at a premium price because Traeger said they were superior and recommended for my Traeger smoker.

  • Amanda October 8, 2019

Wow this is crazy, i had been using Traeger pellets for a while but about 2 months I switched to a different brand because the last bag we had was suppose to be Hickory BBQ but tasted like the Apple blend. I love grilling and do it often and like real wood not flavored wood!! So this whole time I’ve been burning oils into my food..

  • Vicki Foster October 8, 2019

As others have commented, the quality of Traeger pellets has diminished in the past few years. I do specifically grill foods with different woods in order to get the flavor I desire. I would like to be added to the class action lawsuit.

pleas add me to Treager law suit. I have used the mesquite wood pelle specifically for the flavor the wood adds to the meat or poultry.

  • Donald Savicky October 8, 2019

Add me… I have been using this brand and I am very displeased to find out this is a GMO product. I may opt out of the class action and make my own claim.

  • Vanessa October 8, 2019

I started driving over 40 miles round trip to get REAL wood pellets without added oils. It’s a disgrace Traeger sells their brand name pellets as if they are something that they are not!

  • Kim Zamora October 8, 2019

I want in! We’ve been paying extra for traeger pellets for years believing they were premium wood pellets!

  • Krystine Alcock October 8, 2019

We use a Traeger smoker to grill our meats with what is supposed to be a variety of enriched woods to give it amazing flavors. It is very disheartening to learn that we are paying high prices for cheap wood that is infused with oils and not the real wood itself. My fear is with all the carcinogens and cancers out there, is this oil completely safe for us to be ingesting? I have enough medical.problems and do not need to add to anymore.

  • Sue saulter October 8, 2019

It’s a sales gimmick with Traeger, all their pellets taste the same, we have tried all of them and spent a fortune on there pellets as well as there grills
We have used other pellets from other Mfg with same size, only 1/2 price, works better than Traeger, not sure why this company Traeger charges for the Same smoked flavor, just different names, we do brisket and fish and there is a difference with other brands , just saying! we do not buy Traeger pellets any longer

Add me – I have bought ONLY Traeger Grill Pellets for about 7 years.

  • Christian Jackson October 8, 2019

I have owned my Traeger grill for a year now and have used at least 3 different flavored pellets. Please add me to this claim.

  • Jeanine Kennemur October 8, 2019

  • John October 8, 2019

Wow I can’t believe I was Okey-doked. I’m on my second Trager grill and only buy there products

  • Kerry Moutray October 8, 2019

I pay 24.99 a bag had my grill 7 years to find out this information. I will join the lawsuit as well

  • Geoff Stewart October 7, 2019

If I buy mesquite pellets, I expect them to be made out of mesquite

  • Steve October 6, 2019

Dusty Dale’s are made of all wood.

  • Michael Goodspeed October 6, 2019

What a rip off. I have been buying ONLY Traeger wood pellets since I bought my first grill in 2011. I grill year round and I pay more for their pellets because they are supposed to be high quality and made from the wood identified. Not anymore.

  • Tyler Agnew October 6, 2019

I defi feel ripped off. At 24$ a bag it should be the real deal. I buy a bag every 2 weeks. Total bs. Getting new grill

    • BBQ Bob October 7, 2019

Try the Broil King pellet grills. So glad I made the switch.
The actually cook way better and have a better temperature range.
      Can actually sear a steak!
And their pellets are actually made of the wood they claim….

  • Scott October 6, 2019

There is no flavor difference in woods like people think. Wood is wood. The difference is how they burn. Wood pellets arent like wood chunks or logs. Pellets have less burn that produces less smoke which gives less smoke flavor. If I knew this before I bought a pellet grill I would of never bought one. Plus they are for lazy weekend bbqers.

  • Eric J Torfason October 6, 2019

Spent 100’s of dollars on trager pellets and never got the flavor results I wanted. Finally after about 2 years I switched to a company that promises 100% actual wood and the difference is out standing. Like nothing I could ever get out of traeger! Glad to see someone standing up for the people and holding advertising accountable.

    • K October 6, 2019

What company do you use. Also a Traeger user.

  • Roger Moyers October 6, 2019

Purchased a Memphis Pellet grill this year. My first bag of pellets was from Home Depot, Treager Mesquite. After reading reviews on Treager pellets I no longer use their product. Pellets made from the actual hardwood are readily available and I can create m own blends to experiment. Treager should just be upfront about their product.

  • I Like to BBQ October 6, 2019

Any BBQ enthusiast, amateur or pro takes pride in selecting the right type of woods for their specific food consider the significant variables in taste profiles associated w different wood. IE they care. If you’ve spent $1000 on a grill, you likely care about it and want to accomplish some specific BBQ goals and want to be selective about how and with what you cook with. No problem with Traeger selling what they want but BIG problem w Traeger not being forth coming about it. Oak soaked in mesquite oil is not mesquite. Just be honest and let the consumer make their own choice. Frankly I’ve always been suspicious of wood pellets and what could potentially be in them and where they are sourced.

  • Frank Gonzalez October 6, 2019

Go Golden’s Cast Iron kamado and use whatever wood or charcoal to your heart’s content. Let the lawyers starve and eat boxed mac and cheese. Welcome to the Iron Age.

  • Louis October 6, 2019

Do research, only hickory and mesquite have flavored oils in them. The other varieties have 30% of the stated wood. 70% base wood(oak or alder) for consistent burn rate and low ash. But seriously, DON’T take my wood for it, buy Lumberjack or one of the other brands of 100% percent flavor wood pellets and see the results. And the much higher cost…and the mountain of ash after one use…

    • Concerned Citizen October 7, 2019

Traeger does not use flavor woods like they say, hickory, mesquite, or otherwise. I am a former employee and am speaking from experience.
Joke around the office used to be “It’s 100% what it says on the bag,” knowing full well it was 100% what was on the mill floor that day.

  • LJL October 6, 2019

Woodworker and Traeger griller here, I too was surprised when I found this out awhile ago. After switching to pure pellets, I realized why they do this. Different woods burn at different rates and produce different levels of heat. Also, burn efficiency results in different amount of ash left over.
Oak burns very efficiently, so minimal ash, as well as steady heat. It is also cheap.
The Mesquite and Hickory are pure base wood (on the west coast they use Alder, east coast Red Oak) with oil added. The fruit woods (pecan, cherry, apple) are 70% base wood, and 30% of stated wood. This gives flavor while maintain correct BTU and minimal ash.
I bought Pecan Lumberjack Grilling Pellets that are 100% of the stated wood. The flavor was great, however the amount of ash was insane. Instead of vacuuming out the fire pit every 4 or 5 uses, I had to every time I used it. Also the pellets fall apart a bit more, leading to auger jams.
    Worth it? Depends I guess.
I see why Traeger uses the wood they do, and have gone back to using their pellets (I will mix 100% Mesquite in though). However I do not agree with their shady “100% hardwood” claim. While true, it implies it’s 100% the stated wood. Also the void warranty if you use other pellets is a bit lame, but there’s no way they could prove it.

    • Torin October 6, 2019

“Warranty void” used to be a correct statement. No more.

  • Daryl October 6, 2019

Wow! Yall are that petty that you worry about a small amount of possibly undetectable oil in a wood pellet that you will have to drag blood sucking lawyers into this. REALLY PEOPLE??? Shut up, sit down, turn the grill on 325°, have a beer and enjoy life. Or go buy a cheaper grill. But dont bitch cause it taste like crap. Traeger Rules!!!!!

    • Jeff Snider October 6, 2019

There is no right way to do a wrong thing… I bet you have never lived this…

  • Donald Walter Eldred October 6, 2019

I’ve been a barbecue enthusiast’s all my life I was planning and buying a wood pellet grill for the 2020 grilling season now I’m glad that I found this class action lawsuit against Traeger I am not buying a Traeger grill or a pellet grill for the 2020 season and thank you guys for opening my eyes towards this wood pellet issue keep using charcoal and wood thank you

    • Frank gonzalez October 6, 2019

Stay away from the green egg. Biggest marketing scam of the century. They eventually crack inside and out. Go Golden’s cast Iron kamado. Your family will thank me for the next 500 years. Welcome to the Iron Age.

    • Frank gonzalez October 6, 2019

Stay away from the green egg. Biggest marketing scam of the century. They eventually crack inside and out. Go Golden’s cast Iron kamado. Your family will thank me for the next 500 years. Let the lawyers starve.

  • Martha Pound October 6, 2019

I also bought a Treager Grill thinking the pellets or what they say not treated with oil. You can only use there pellets in the grill. I like to join the law suit. Martha Pound

  • Dave October 5, 2019

It’s pretty bad they lie to, saying that the wood they use is high quality wood. And use low quality wood and add oil to get the flavor. I’ve had mine for over ten years and all this time I have been paying between $18 to $20.00 a bag. So it looks like you can use any types of pellets in which don’t cost $18.00+

  • Jeffrey Adam October 5, 2019

Sad that Traeger would do this. I have used several of their different varieties, including the mesquite, believing that the pellets are actually made of mesquite.

  • Mark Whitwam October 5, 2019

What a bunch of whiners. Who cares? There are more important things to worry about. Get a life!

  • Kurt Eikmeier October 5, 2019

We also use different flavored Traeger pellets thinking they were real…Makes me sad..Plz add me too

  • Kevin Morrison October 5, 2019

Yes, I like using different woods for my grilling. I also hate being lied to!!

  • Joshua October 5, 2019

So, I’ve been paying $20 a bag for pellets, to feed my Traeger grill and they are not really the wood I am paying for?

And there is a big warming sticker on my $800 grill and also in the manual that use of no-Traeger pellets will void my warranty?

Sounds like there is a bigger legal issue here than oil infused hardwoods. Like the fact that Traeger demands that owners of Traeger grills ONLY use Traeger brand pellets or else they warranty is void because Traeger pellets are supposed to be the highest quality pellet.

  • Terry Howe October 5, 2019

Disappointing been using them for years. If my memory is correct Trager even says that your warranty on your grill can be avoided if you dont use their pellets. Terry

  • Michael October 5, 2019

Glad to know I’m not crazy. Can’t tell the difference between the different flavored pellets.

  • fastyle October 5, 2019

This is disappointing to hear, I’ve had my Traeger for about 12 years and have had good reliability.

Have used mostly Traeger pelets due to availably, time to move on I guess!

  • Rick Blackburn October 5, 2019

This is truly disappointing. I have used at least ten 20 pound bags of varying woods. Currently I have pecan and apple in my grill.

    • LL October 6, 2019

The apple and pecan are still 30% the stated wood, and 70% base wood(alder or oak) to maintain burn rate. I use their pecan. I believe just their mesquite and Hickory use oils.

  • Elliott October 5, 2019

Sign me up for the lawsuit!

  • Jeffery Glover October 5, 2019

I too agree that the Traeger Pellets are a disappointment when it comes to flavor and consistency. I have tried pretty much every blend as well as the individuals. I switched from Traeger to a Grilla Grill and use thier pellets now. Big difference. Definately an issue with the Traeger pellets.

  • William D Gould October 5, 2019

I have traeger grill small version and I could not get good taste off the wood chips that I bought from traeger, my next grill pit boss. Let me no where I sign up law suit.

  • Alyssa October 5, 2019

We had a traeger as well. Ended up with a “combustion explosion” as the rep called it. Ended up returning it to Costco. Traeger customer service was horrible. Treated us like idiots and basically told us they can send us parts. Our traeger was just under 3 months old when this happened. And the entire inside was charred so what parts can u possibly send us? We filed a complaint with the traeger rep at Costco, never heard back from the company. This was a 2000$ grill. It not cheap. Never again.

    • Tanner October 5, 2019

Sounds like you are in fact how the Rep treated you. Stick with an oven.

  • Dawn October 5, 2019

My husband bought a traeger grill and we go out of our way to buy only traeger pellets. NOT ANY MORE!! That’s too bad. We also had an issue with the pellet auger. Customer service treated us like morons. We bought a Pitt Boss.

  • M Johnson October 5, 2019

Please add me. The company only wants you to use their brand pellets with their smokers, but the pellets are deceptively not made made from the stated hardwoods.

  • Phillip Faiazza October 5, 2019

This has been known for a very long time. As soon as I found out I returned my Traeger BBQ and bought a GMG. Only use real wood pellets also

  • PL October 5, 2019

Wife bought me Traeger last April. Even manual says to use only Traeger pellets due to their premium quality? What a waste.

    • Andres October 5, 2019

This is very disturbing. I bought my Traeger last year. I didn’t pay that much money for oil-infused pellets. I haven’t been that pleased with my Traeger, for a few reasons. I wish I’d have bought a Pit Boss. I’ve had food from both brands, and the Pit Boss seems to produce a deeper smoke. Now that makes sense, if their wood is real.

      • Tanner October 5, 2019

Just buy different pellets you cry babies.

  • Kevin October 5, 2019

Makes you wonder what other brands do this. I have bought green mountain grill pellets they seem to be better quality than traeger but they are also more expensive. Guess I know why now. Hopefully it means they are actually using the actual wood

  • Donald Newby October 5, 2019

Where do you sign up for the lawsuit??

  • Randy Todd October 5, 2019

If this is the case and the pellets are a fraud there is most likely another lawsuit awaiting. When you purchase a traeger grill and read the fine print the warrenty is only good if you use treager brand pellets.

  • Jerome October 5, 2019

I Own my Trager grill for two years and I used trager pellets thinking because they are much higher in price and their pellets are what trager recommends, I thought their pellets was all natural.
Please add me to the list.

  • Bongo Gottstein October 5, 2019

I have been using traeger pellets and grill for years. I’m bummed that they would do this to its loyal customers. Please add me to the list.

  • Israel FloresCarrillo October 5, 2019

I use treager mesquite pellets most of the time because I was raised in Texas, aff me to list

  • John Szewczak October 5, 2019

Yes. I only use Traeger Mesquite wood pellets, because I want that particular flavor.

  • Jim Staggs October 5, 2019

I have been using these pellets since I bought my Traeger 5 years ago. What a joke, please add me to the list as well.

  • James Ferguson October 5, 2019

After 3 different bags I don’t spend the extra for treager pellets. No real flavor or smoke. Please add me to the list.

  • Jim October 5, 2019

    Never again

  • Don October 5, 2019

I stopped using Traeger grills(returned 4) and their pellets long ago! The grills all broke and are junk. The pellets were so bad and I got tires of my food being covered with sawdust and ash! That’s when I found SmokeRing bbq pellets 100% the wood it says and incredible pellets!

  • Mark Shaw October 5, 2019

I have a Traeger grill and was also misled about Traeger pellets. Please add me to the list

  • Shelia Johnson October 5, 2019

I thought this was a legitimate company that wouldn’t take advantage of their customers!!! Boy was I wrong!! Add me to the list please!!

  • Thomas Jason Ward October 5, 2019

Have been traeger grilling for the last year or so myself, like the grill but definitely didn’t see any noticeable differences when I tried there different flavor pellets like I should have if they had those authentic woods. Add me

  • Dustin Atwood October 5, 2019

Had no idea, only buy Traeger pellers due to this exact reason! Thought I was getting top notch wood pellets, now I need to start looking around. Would like to be added.

  • Traviss Carter October 5, 2019

I have a traeger and love it. Didn’t know they used oils in there pellets. I will be looking at another brand of REAL pellets.

  • John Velarde October 5, 2019

I used only treager pellets when I first purchased my grill.thinking I had to use there pellets.I was not in pressed with the flavor.the cost of there pellets in a small bag had me triing another brand of pellets.

  • Larry Nauta Jr. October 5, 2019

Just over 1.5 yrs with my Costco “special event” Traeger grill. (Gave away my old grill QUICKLY) Absolutely LOVE the wood-pellet concept of grilling!! Anyone who has never tried it…SHOULD.!! It’ll change your life.
Being only a slightly above averaged experienced grilling person…we are still AMAZED at the different stuff that we can cook on our Traeger. (Mind boggling..)
I ALSO believed that I had to ONLY buy TRAEGER pellets to insure my Traeger grill would function properly.
We use the grill “several times a week” since buying it.
ONLY CON: My controller unit FAILED and would NOT START UP anymore at about ONE YEAR old. This summer and I went online and bought another digital controller and installed it myself. Traeger Tech Support is TOP NOTCH. I now have two separate temperature probes instead of only one that I can use when using my Traeger.

    Please ADD me also.

  • Stage October 5, 2019

Yup, love my Traeger, but switched away from their sham pellets a few years ago. Was very disappointed when I did my own research, especially their further claim that you MUST use their pellet product for any success. Very careful wording/marketing on their pellet bags, so we all think they’re genuine. Switched to Lumberjack pellets! Check them out, you’ll understand why!

  • Bobcabral October 5, 2019

.wow being buying more than 20 bags even paid higher price when pick up at Costco and pick up bags 15.00 had to buy 10 for that price paid for treger about 800.00 then had grill about 8to10 years pickup pallets homedeport 2 weeks ago 6 bags was going to pickup more i cook every weekend and holiday’s suprises

  • shawn MAPLES October 5, 2019

That is why I would not buy a second rate grill like trager and would never use their pellets….this has been very well known information about traeger pellets in the smoking world..

  • Rich Kelly October 5, 2019

I also only buy traeger pellets thinking it’s real. That what the advertisements portray. Add me please..

  • Brian October 5, 2019

    I knew it!

  • Russell Martin October 5, 2019

I switched to pit boss also….traeger WHY?

  • Ted Nelson October 5, 2019

Wow, now traeger too? I’ve been using their mesquite and hickory pellets for over 15 years and thought I was getting the teal wood. Guess I’ll have to rethink my choice of pellets from here on out!

  • Jacob DeJong October 5, 2019

How in the world can this be safe to smoke with?
I’ve been using Traeger grills and pellets for close to 20 years.

    Add me to this.

  • Larry Lynch October 5, 2019

To me the wood is the most important part of the smoking, next to the meat you use.
It is a complete fraud to mislead with cheap flavored wood. I don’t like Traeger pellets anyway.

  • Woody McPelletier October 5, 2019

Is this a project for/from some elementary school law club? The grammar and writing style look like the work of a 5th grader.

  • Blane V Atwell October 5, 2019

Yeah I thought they were specific kinds of wood. This is a huge deception.

  • Mark Condon October 5, 2019

I certainly do and have purchased Traeger pellets looking for multiple specific kinds of wood. This is unbelievable and totally dishonest.

  • isaac santillan October 5, 2019

Add me to this I have a recording of them ok n the phone with me and they new I was recording and was okay with it . Admitting they use a oil

  • Brad October 5, 2019

I switched to Lumberjack brand when I heard of this deception. Criminal!

    • Larry Lynch October 5, 2019

Love their wood. Never a problem and good flavor.

  • Tom McCraw October 5, 2019

What a scam. I switched to pit boss pellets. Happy so far. They are blended woods, but no oils I’m told.

  • Brett Garr October 5, 2019

What other health effects may the oils cause????

  • Sam October 5, 2019

Typically spending $1000s on pellets every year for around 3 years now, using only Traeger for warranty and was sold them from salesmen who also claimed no additives nor anything besides all natural woods as labeled. Very disappointed

  • Elliott O’Reilly October 5, 2019

I was told that the pellets were blended with hardwood to reach desired temps but was not told about oil use. I had found that 100% Apple did not reach higher temps and sometimes went out. I ended up using pure woods in a smoker tube to enhance the flavor

  • Josh Podrebarac October 5, 2019

Same here, been buying Treager Pellets for years now

  • Josh Robbins October 5, 2019

I too have purchased every variety of traeger brand pellet based on advertising claims of different woods for different types of meat. I was under the full impression that these were 100% wood based on advertising claims and third party representatives at Costco who sold them to me.

  • GREGORY HAMILTON October 5, 2019

Same here Treager pellets are the only ones I ever use and I too have always wondered why they dont smell like the natural woods I use it my pit. Also very disappointed especially since I’ve spent a huge amount of money on the pellets. I’ve had my Treager for 12 years and primarily cook on it. That’s at least a bag a month,

  • Susie Sadorra October 5, 2019

I purchased only particular flavor of woods based on the type of meat we were cooking.

  • Sergio perry October 5, 2019

I also purchase Traeger brand for flavor and for warranty compliance.

    • Glen Holstlaw October 5, 2019

      Same here.

  • Mark Miller October 5, 2019

Yes, I too have bought specific ‘flavor’ Traeger pellets for different meats based on their claim that the pellets are 100% whatever species is marked on the bag.

  • Christopher Sloan October 5, 2019

Yes I seek out their pellets as they are purportedly the best. Very disappointed that oil would be added for flavour.

  • Josh October 5, 2019

I use all there pellet for grilling do to the advertising and my company (that is a dealer ) said there is nothing better and i grill/smoke every weekend I HOPE I DONT GET SICK

  • Josh October 5, 2019

Been using Traeger pellets since buying my smoker due to both the advertising and the threat of a voided warranty if I used anything else. I’ll be looking to join this class action especially if there are any health risks predicted or otherwise with using oil soaked pellets.

    • Marc Merberg October 5, 2019

Have a container with mesquite right now. How do we join lawsuit

  • Teddous Rosemore October 5, 2019

I use Traeger Mesquite and Apple because of Traeger’s advertising.

  • Ronald Manser October 5, 2019

I use mostly Apple and cherry from Traeger. At times I will use mesquite.

  • JB October 5, 2019

I’ve been buying the Traeger brand pellets as well because of how they’re advertised. Not only that, but the warranty for Traeger says that it can be avoided by not using there pellets if something happens to your grill.

  • JOE HORNSTEIN October 5, 2019

Just another scam like everything else in this world. Sickens me to the core. Spend more money on premium and and up with junk. I switched to Home Depot competition pellets and noticed better flavor and less ash. I wish people would be honest in the world and stop cheating people for a buck. Hope they get what’s coming.

  • Otis Lavender October 5, 2019

I purposely buy Traeger pellets because they say it’s 100% and to only used Traeger pellets in the Traeger grill.

  • David Greer October 5, 2019

Always buy Traeger pellets because they are advertised as being the best.

  • Suzanne Julian October 5, 2019

Same here, purposely bought this brand of pellets because they claim 100% hardwoods on the package. Should be illegal!

  • Jonathan Cable October 5, 2019

It only took 5 minutes on Google to know this about Traeger pellets. The have a patent for this. Most brands use 70 to 80 percent oak or alder and the 20 to 30% flavor wood. Traeger is worse where they use 100% oak or alder and flavored oils. If you want good pellets you buy Lumber Jack or Smokering pellets, they use only 100% whole log stock of the flavor you buy. They even tell you what is in their blends. Bought one bag of Traeger and new once I smelled the pellets they was not real hickory.

  • David Allison October 5, 2019

Sad that companies choose to lie for a bigger profit line. I stated by others the manufacturer of the pellets are as much to blame as the grill manufacturers.

  • Christopher October 5, 2019

Add me to the list, as always, profits are more important than the consumer

  • Stephen Caswell October 5, 2019

Freaking crazy I guess there are quite a few of us that have been bamboozled! They got me!

  • Patrick October 5, 2019

They took advantage of me. Add me to the list

  • Nicola leRoex October 5, 2019

This is really upsetting. Their pellets are expensive, and to think that they have had the audacity to lie to us all this time!!!

  • Barbara Jackson October 5, 2019

Traeger is just another company that puts profits above all else. I shouldn’t be surprised in today’s profiteering climate but it still hurts. I’m in. These companies need to be held accountable for their deceitful business practices.

  • Derich Sonye October 5, 2019

I’m in I’ve been buying their pellets for five years. I’ve never been able to tell a difference in the flavor of smoke.

    • cindy wallace October 5, 2019

      Please add me

    • Eric Rayburn October 5, 2019

Not only have I been mislead by their false claims of using 100% wood but also it says on the traeger grill to only use their pellets which I have been doing. First time owning a pellet grill and wanted to stick by the Instructions since I believed traeger was a good honest company. Guess I was wrong. Please add me to this

  • Greg October 5, 2019

So upsetting. I have had my traeger since they launched at costco. These pellets are damn expensive and mind you I can only find them at select stores in my area.

    Add me to the list

  • Russ vandivor October 5, 2019

I live in north central Arkansas. In mt. View Arkansas there’s a company that makes pellets for my camp chef, traeger, pit boss, etc. Companies that make grills don’t also make wood pellets. In sure all the pellets are pretty much the same no matter the brand. Its just a lie.

Not accurate. Check out No fillers, all pure flavor wood.

I looked at that site. Sounds real good. I may try them. But I will assure u what I stayed is true. They have pallets of many different brands at that plant. In assuming They are made with the same process.

I only bought the mesquite once and couldn’t stand it, even though I love mesquite bbq sauce. This explains why I didn’t like it.

Add me to the list. I can’t believe that they would knowingly dupe us like that. All the advertising states to use Traeger brand pellets for best results. Not to mention Traeger pellets are much more expensive then other brands. I had a problem with my Traeger Smoker and when I called I was asked if I was using Traeger pellets so they want to monopolize the business to have you use their products but then not giving you exactly what it’s supposed to be is very deceiving

I dunno man….everyone’s looking to sue everyone these days. The should issue you a refund, offer a lifetime supply of pellets and relabel the product but no money for anyone.

  • Roland kempf October 5, 2019

Please add me to this, the.pellets have failed to give the flavor it hgad on the bag.

  • Jack Kimmerling October 5, 2019

Very disturbing how easily manipulated the consumer c as n be. I’m in.

  • Jerolyn Ochs October 5, 2019

Please add me to this. I purchased a Traeger in May 2019. As a result two of my friends on the same day purchased Traegers for a total of three that day. I had wanted a smoker for years. I have used it all summer. It could bot acheive the same smoked flavor that some local barbeque restaurants I have gone through 4 bags of pellets. We thought we needed hickory perhaps because it is supposedly the most flavorful. I am seriously disappointed.

Please add me too. Adding artificial ingredients to food or food products is something I am against.

  • Jim Steinmiller October 5, 2019

This is very upsetting. I have owned my Timberline for 2 years and cook on it at least 2-3 times per month. I am making home cured bacon (no nitrates) today with Traeger maple wood. I wonder what it really is. We organic farm in our yard, and purchase local non antibiotic pork, beef, lamb and chicken. We are very careful with what we eat. What are the long term effects of consuming these oils?

  • david hamm October 5, 2019

This is disturbing news. I have been mislead as well. Add me

  • Scott Duncan October 5, 2019

Add me also I have been buying Traeger pellets for over 10 years thinking they were top quality

  • Chance Fessler October 5, 2019

I only buy trager pellets on special occasions or on for grilling specifically expensive beef cuts because I want that robust hardwood flavor… So I guess the fact I’ve been using an essential oil flavored pellet instead of pure grill pellets is very disappointing.

  • Michael Rametta October 5, 2019

Add me, I have purchased many bags of only Traeger pellets. Even driven more than 30 miles because the grill salesman told me to only use their brand of pellets..

  • TaylorMade October 5, 2019

Uhhh, what is this wood flavored burning oil that I have infused lbs and lbs of meat made of? Add me please.

  • Mark Kurkjy October 5, 2019

    Add me

    add me

  • Scott short October 4, 2019

We have bought many bags of Traeger pellets with the assumption they were top of line product. Very disappointed to hear this and will make me rethink my purchases.

  • MARTY KOENIG October 4, 2019
