Following a bankruptcy filing, consumers who were injured by OxyContin or other addictive opioids manufactured by Purdue Pharma may be able to recover compensation.

The claim program benefits individuals who were injured by Purdue opioids such as OxyContin before Sept. 15, 2019, or the families of minors or deceased victims.

In September 2019, Purdue Pharma declared bankruptcy after facing significant liability in OxyContin and opioid addiction lawsuits. Following their bankruptcy filings, Purdue launched a $23.8 million ad campaign in order to advertise a claims program.

Under the claims deal, Purdue will pay to resolve the claims in nearly 3,000 lawsuits alleging that their OxyContin and other opioid products were irresponsibly produced. Allegedly, the company downplayed the risks of their opioids and overstated the benefits.

As a result, hundreds of thousands of people have allegedly died over the past 20 years as part of the opioid epidemic in America.

“A lot of the victims don’t know that they were victimized. They may think that they’re addicts. They may think that they have a moral failing or a character failing,” Ed Neiger, a lawyer for opioid victims, told AP News. “There were people in a boardroom that caused them to become addicted to opioids.”

Although the amount that consumers can collect hasn’t been finalized, compensation may be available to injured parties. A Class Member’s payment will vary depending on the injury they suffered (death, addiction, dependence, lost wages, loss of wages, loss of spousal relationship, etc.).

In order to receive benefits from the settlement, Class Members must file a valid claim form online or through the mail by June 20, 2020. Class Members should include proof of any damages or injuries.

The individuals providing their stories in the ‘comments’ here should not be compelled to debate any “blame” challenges made by fellow posters. The people making the final decisions regarding these addiction claims are not these individuals. This is especially true as TCA is known to attract Internet trolls from time to time that post offensive or attacking posts for just that purpose. Also, please keep in mind that the claims date has passed — it was originally 6/30/20 and then was extended to 7/30/20. It is unlikely that it will get extended again, but is possible if a judge decides it is warranted.

  5. B Skinner says:

I too have been hurt by opioids. Now, I believe in pain control I hv been in so much pain until bp shot up. So I’m on both sides . The only way some can have some quality of life is by pain meds. Me.I hv spondylitis, bulging disc, and stenosis, with arthritis. Sciatica.Several years ago I could walk no better than a toddler. Could hardly get out of bed , couldn’t stand nor sit long. Didn’t want to take opioids but with the opioids and injections and God ,I now hv better mobility with LOTS less pain. On the flip side, my husband became addicted because of RA and cancer. While I’m not addicted, he at one time doctor shopped and got thrown out of treatment and refused to go to behavioral Med programs. He now gets them from the streets. Every extra dime he gets is spent on these pills. I hv to give him money because he’s so pitiful when he doesn’t hv them in his system.Blood pressure shoots up and chest pains. If I weren’t so strong we would lose everything we have. I don’t know what to do. Neither of us knew how addictive these pills were years ago. Why were we not informed? At times we would go to the Dr for help and they would be offered. I once had to tell a nurse that Asked me if I wanted them, I didn’t want pain pills , I needed A diagnoses. What do we do now?

  6. Glenn J DeBoard says:

    I hope you do .

  7. Joanne Faith Buckley says:

I lost my wife to Oxy. She would never take anything addictive. When I suggested there was a problem, I was told they were prescribed by her doctor and the doctor should know what is addictive! I was beaten and forced to leave the house. She died of oxy intoxication. I never thought this could happen. My life was turned upside down. I lost a spouse, our grandkids lost a grandparent, she lost jobs and I almost lost the house. I had to have roommates to help pay. Pills did so much damage to our lives! Really wish the doctors would stop prescribing them.

  8. Cecelia Pirastru says:

My husband started taking this after being prescribed by Pain Management Dr!! The pills were so in control
Of him & the pain was still there! He took more & more & eventually seemed outside for more! This was the beginning of the end!! He lost his job, we lost our home, our marriage was in emotional turmoil!! My husband passed away & left us with nothing but empty bottles!! Our lives were turned upside down!! We lost everything & my kids lost their dad & i lost my husband!! They swore this would help & non addictive well I can assure you that’s not the case!! We need help

  9. Nazikifea Stingley says:

My sibling and I are having a real hard time losing our mother over this. Even though you can put a price on death. I hope they give us this settlement so went can take her to her favorite place and spread her ashes their. Then she can rest in paradise knowing that we will be ok. My mom has been fighting this battle since I was 12yrs old. Now I’m 42yrs old. But that little girls comes out of me and I just cry. Addition is real and the people you love suffer tremendously trying to find ways to help them get off of it. If I get compensated I’m going to start a program in honor of the people who are dealing with addiction and help the families the suffer from it. Especially the children cause as kid. I know what I went through and I want to help young women and men that is going through what I went through.??

  10. Robert says:

You need to look up what happens when you get addicted and hopefully none of you or family is addicted
