Ferrara Candy Company agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit that accuses the business of discriminating against potential workers simply because they are African-American.
Plaintiffs Brian Lucas, Aronzo Davis, Torrence Vaughans and Maurice Milton filed the class action lawsuit on behalf of themselves and all others seeking employment at the Ferrara Candy Company, either directly or through two staffing agencies known as Labor Power and REM.
According to the lawsuit, the company limited or completely excluded African-American workers from being hired by Ferrara for positions of Machine Operator, Mogul Cook, Engrosser, Janitor, Quality Control Technician or Shipping Clerk.
The plaintiffs claim that they were steered away from available jobs at Ferrara by the staffing agencies who instead hired Latinos for those positions.
Ferrara, Labor Power and REM denied all allegations of wrongdoing but decided to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the cost of further litigation.

SORRY YOU DIDNโT GET A CHANCE TO MAIL/SUBMITT YOUR CLAIM.PEOPLE WHO SPEAK THIS KIND OF LANGUAGE, LIKE IN INTELLIGENT,YOUR COMMENT IS GOING TO BE REMOVED.
Well today I was told a payment little more then a 1,000 dollars but this is before taxes. Hey I am happy to get anything. Itโs all free money.
Who told u that
Hey! Nino, Did someone from the attorneyโs office told you $1000.00?
I was told that the class action members would be getting $5000.oo a piece
Awesome!
Wow! thatโs sound great. Did someone from the attorneyโs office tell you we would be getting $5000.00 each?
he made it up. according to the more realistic numbers, it should be between $800-$1000 if we are lucky. no idea if that is pre or post tax. $5k means only 300 people filed.
According to the settlement in the beginning, the reward was 7500.
Are you just pulling my legs? Because we to only put the truth on these pages.
Shayla, go straight to hell with gasoline drawers! To me questions are stupid, I was looking for information, not some smart ass response!
Lynn, did they say how much taxes were being taken out?
Jane
Hi Jane,
This is Lynn I was told the checks would be a little under $1,000. I have no idea how much taxes is being withheld. I was just told they are going to report it to the IRS.
Hi Lynn,
I have called that same number. All I receive is an automated message telling me, โthis mailbox is fullโ Then it hangs up lolโฆI wished they would tell us something. You would think they should have names of those that are receiving checks by now.
I called just before Christmas. I left my name and number for them to call me back. When the lady called me back I was not home. I tried calling back, but was unable to reach anyone.
Still no appeals everything still looking good ppl
Cause that person is lying. Plain and simple. Nobody is talking with the attorneys.
I called the attorney today they said checks are going out in January. They were able to look up my claim for to see if I was a eligible claimant. I was told the checks will be a little under 1,000 after taxes.
I think he gave incorrect info.that is why we recvd w-9 &w-4 forms. we are responable for paying our own taxes with the irs.I Think they are better off,not answering their phone, than to answer and just tell a person anything.or you didnโt turn your forms back in.
ITS AMAZING HOW YOUโRE THE ONLY ONE TO GET THRU TO THE ATTORNEYS,I WONDER WHY YOUโRE THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS INFORMATION?????
Hello Lynn, do you think it will be the beginning of January?
Lynn,
What number did you call? Can you please provide me the attorneys name and phone number?
I called workers law office pc chicago the number is 312.795.9120. Let me know if they tell you the same information they related to me.
Lynn, what did they tell you? please respond back.
Hi Janice,
They told me that checks will go out in the beginning of Jan. She told me they took taxes out and reported it to the IRS.
Have anyone heard anything new today?
No appeals filed as of today, which is good news! The settlement will be Effective 31 days after final approval, as long as no appeals are filed. We are following the case and will let our TCA viewers know if any last minute appeals are filed!
Hello, When are our checks being mail out?
I would try and call (888) 586-9841 and ask because you should have gotten the tax papers already and sent them back thatโs how they found out how many people was in the class action settlement.
