Consumers whose personal information was compromised by a 2023 Atlantic General data breach could benefit from a $2.25 million settlement.
The settlement benefits individuals who received a mailed data breach notification from Atlantic General Hospital informing them their information may have been compromised in the breach.
Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit claim Atlantic General could have prevented a data breach in January 2023 by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures. During the breach, hackers allegedly gained access to sensitive consumer information, such as Social Security numbers, health insurance information, financial account numbers and more.
Atlantic General Hospital is a health care system in Maryland that serves patients in Maryland and Delaware.
Atlantic General hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $2.25 million to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive three years of free credit monitoring and insurance services.
Class members can also receive cash payments from the settlement. Claimants with documented data breach related expenses can receive up to $5,000 in reimbursement for these losses. Individuals without documented losses can opt to receive a pro rata cash reward. These payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed and the amount left in the settlement fund after the deduction of reimbursement payments and other costs.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is July 23, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Sept. 5, 2024.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Aug. 22, 2024.
