Individuals whose Consumer Reports program renewed automatically may be eligible to benefit from a $1.15 million class action settlement.
The Class is made up of anyone in California who, between March 2, 2016, and Nov. 5, 2020, enrolled in an automatic renewal or continuous service program through Consumer Reports for Consumer Reports magazine, Consumer Reports On Health, Consumer Reports Online, and/or Consumer Reports All Access and was charged for an automatic renewal of such a subscription.
The plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit alleged Consumer Reports enrolled certain consumers in programs that renewed automatically or continuous service programs, charging the consumers’ payment cards without first providing the terms of the automatic renewals clearly, a violation of state law.
The defendant denies any allegations of wrongdoing, and the Court has not ruled in favor of either party in this case.
The publication, founded in 1936, according to its website, provides product reviews, news, and other information for consumers.
After attorneys’ fees and other expenses are deducted from the settlement fund, Class Members who submit valid claims will be eligible for a payment.
While the final amount of these payments is not yet known, each Class Member whose Consumer Reports program renewed automatically will receive a proportionate share, and there will be no cap.
A final approval hearing in the settlement will take place Nov. 5, 2021.
Those who wish to opt out of or object to the settlement must do so by Sept. 27, 2021.
The deadline to file a claim is also Sept. 27, 2021.
