Honda recall overview:

  • Who: Honda is recalling more than 290,000 Acura MDX Type-S, Honda Pilot and Acura TLX Type-S vehicles.
  • Why: A software error can cause an engine stall or loss of power.
  • Where: The Honda recall is active in the United States.

Honda is recalling more than 290,000 Acura MDX Type-S, Honda Pilot and Acura TLX Type-S vehicles as a software error can cause an engine stall or loss of power.

The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Jan. 23. It applies to 294,612 model year 2022-2025 Acura MDX Type-S, 2023-2025 Honda Pilot, and 2021-2025 Acura TLX Type-S vehicles.

According to the recall, a software error in the fuel injection electronic control unit is the cause of the issue. Denso, the supplier of the unit, informed Honda the settings for the correction control logic of the air flow rate and fuel injection volume were wrong, the notice says.

“Due to the improper settings, certain driving conditions could cause a torque control failure to be detected and stall the engine,” the Acura recall says. “An engine stall or loss of power can increase the risk of a crash or injury.”

As of Jan. 16, Honda said it had received 674 warranty claims and no reports of injuries or crashes related to the issue going back to Dec. 9, 2020. Honda is not currently facing legal action over this issue, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.

Honda, Acura recall involves free software upgrade, notice says

To fix the problem, Honda will contact registered owners of all affected vehicles by mail around March 15, and will ask them to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda or Acura dealer.

The dealer will reprogram the vehicles with an improved software program for free, the Honda recall says.

“Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense may be eligible for reimbursement,” it says.

Late last year, Honda issued a recall for more than 200,000 of its Honda Passport and Honda Pilot vehicles over concerns they could develop a fuel leak.

I have a 2002 Acura MDX Type-S when I purchased from the previous owner it ran perfect. Then all of a sudden it started stalling while driving, sitting at the traffic light, slowing to make a turn I had no issues. Now i have issues before the car dies the green key light flashes then the engine shuts off. I have to pull over if possible put my emergency lights on put the car in park start the car and rêve the gas a couple of times then put it in drive.

I was also told I need to put the premium gas cause the lesser one could cause the car to die.
