A new class action lawsuit accuses Honda of selling vehicles prone to engine overheating, misfires, and premature wear due to a coolant leakage defect.
Plaintiff Chris Bissell filed the class action complaint against American Honda Motor Co. Inc. and Honda Motor Co. Limited on Dec. 6 in a California federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
According to the lawsuit, Honda sells certain popular vehicles with serious design defects in some turbocharged engines, including the Honda Accord, Civic and CR-V.
The complaint centers on Honda’s 1.5-liter i-VTEC turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine, which reportedly suffers from “inadequate sealing and cooling.”
According to Bissell, coolant leaks into engine components, causing overheating, loss of power, and contamination of engine oil.
In some instances, drivers experienced sudden engine failure, he alleges. One driver reported that their “car effectively lost power and [was] stuck coasting on a road where traffic regularly travels between 45-50+ mph,” the lawsuit alleges
Honda defect poses safety and financial implications, lawsuit claims
Bissell claims the defect poses serious safety risks to vehicle occupants and other drivers on the road.
He also alleges that Honda has failed to adequately address the issue despite being aware of it. While the defect is covered under warranty, Bissell argues that Honda refuses to honor warranty claims or release an effective remedy.
Bissell’s own vehicle, a 2018 Honda Accord, suffered head gasket failure at 87,000 miles, leading to costly repairs, he claims. After initial repairs by an independent mechanic, a Honda dealership confirmed the defect was a recurring issue.
“The Defect has created a dangerous condition that gives rise to a clear, substantial, and unreasonable risk of death or personal injury,” the lawsuit says.
As a result, Bissell is looking to represent all U.S. owners or lessees of certain Honda models from 2016 to 2022 equipped with the affected engines.
He is suing for breach of warranty, violations of California consumer protection laws, and unjust enrichment, and is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
Meanwhile, Honda is facing a class action lawsuit alleging certain models of its vehicles from model year 2013 onward suffer from a white paint defect that leads to peeling, bubbling and flaking.

Please include me in the Honda lawsuit as I have been having similar issues
I bought my 2018 Honda Accord sport in 2021 a little over a month ago my car overheated so I took it to the shop and they told me I had it a blown head gasket. All maintenance has always been up-to-date on my vehicle. I bought a Honda Accord because I thought it was reliable and a very good car. I don’t understand why My Car is doing this. I only have 107,000 miles on it. I can’t afford to pay $5000 give or take to fix my car. I would like to be added to the lawsuit.
I have a 2019 Honda accord at 67000 miles I am the second owner, I have been having electrical problems, brake system issues & much more. This is extremely unacceptable and a big inconvenience, I havent had my car a total 6months with multiple problems occurring, now I’m researching and seeing so much about whats been happening with my car.I see that this is a common problem, with currently a lawsuit in progress with Honda stating that everyone cars have been over 81,000 miles well mine is not. I am the second owner of my vehicle, not only do I currently have the blown head gasket but there has been electrical issues and break system issues with my vehicle. My car has stopped in the middle of the road using the safety feature as if something was in front of my vehicle but it was not, causing me to almost be hit from the rear end. Something has to be done these are safety features that could cause server harm or worst. I work with clients that I trasnport in my vehicle, as well as children, this is not safe this is unacceptable!
My Honda is currently experiencing the same issues. Honda has really failed me at this point. To not rectify a recurring situation and beating your customers out of their hard earned money is just ridiculous. I use to love Honda because when you buy one you knew you were buying something that would last for generations.. Now it’s like you’re just buying junk on wheels.
My Honda CRV 2017 is in the shop right now and has had all the symptoms and issues that they are speaking about to the “T”. I am so frustrated. They want to put another engine in, for $8000, and the same model but with only 12000 miles on it. How do we know if that one has the same issues right now? I would like to know how I get in on this lawsuit? Does anyone know?
My 2017 Honda CR-V is currently at the Honda shop. They say head gasket. Not enough people to get it off to have further checks on head. It has @99,000 miles. Sounds like mine isn’t the only one.
I purchased a 2015 CR-V Honda with 94000 miles. The engine failed at 96000 miles. I have tried to contact the the dealership, to no avail. My mechanic told me that the old engine had been worked on before, as it had a new oil pan and globs of silicone adhesive around the head gasket. The dealer Serra Crysler,Jeep of Lake Orion, Mi. have stonewalled me without addressing what happened with my engine. Honda used to be known for their durability…but no more! I should have purchased a Toyoda. I replaced the engine but the dealer did not help.
2017 civic
Why is it only for WHITE PAINT / Mine is doing this and it is Blue 2016 Honda Touring. I reported this along time ago… when it first started. There is a Facebook Group of Honda Owners that Paints Peeling, however it is NOT JUST FOR WHITE PAINT… Lots of others out there.
Me too, my black 2018 Honda civic paint starting chipping 3 yrs after I bought it brand new.
i need to be added to this lawsuit as well, less then 100.000 miles a 2019 honda accord head gasket and leaking antifreeze also just happened. i need information they are saying that it cost 4800 to fix, just bought this car have not had a year it is suppose to be a pre certificated used vehicle. i have maintained this vehicle ever since we have got this. they shouldnt be allowed to do this.
