Synchrony Financial ADA Class Action Overview:

  • Who: A legally blind woman is suing Synchrony Financial.
  • Why: Leshawn Young says the online financial advisor service does not have a website that is accessible for the blind in violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
  • Where: The case was filed in New York federal court.

Synchrony Financial’s website is not accessible to blind people, depriving them of the company’s financial advice services, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Leshawn Young filed the class action lawsuit against Synchrony Financial Apr. 5 in a New York federal court, alleging violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)

Young alleges that the website synchronybank.com is not usable by those who are blind, like her, and who use a screen reader to navigate the internet. She said she recently tried to go on the website and encountered multiple access barriers.

The issues block blind people from being able to purchase financial planning services and get financial information, the class action lawsuit alleges.

Synchrony Financial Class Action Highlights Importance of Accessibility During Pandemic

Young said it was particularly important that companies make their websites accessible to disabled people now, during the pandemic, as many disabled people are housebound and need to use services online.

Young is looking to represent all legally blind people in the United States who have attempted to access the website.

She’s suing for an injunction forcing Synchrony to update its website, certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

Last year GE Capital, a predecessor to Synchrony Bank, agreed to pay nearly $8.5 million as part of a settlement resolving claims it mishandled debts following customer bankruptcy.
