JUUL e-cigarettes had unprecedented U.S. sales success last year, increasing 800 percent despite unknown long-term JUUL health effects.
At the same time that anti-smoking campaigns have driven the high school use of traditional cigarettes down to a low of 8.8 percent from 36.4 percent 21 years earlier, the popularity of vaping has soared to new heights, according to CNBC and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
As indicated in a separate CNBC article, dialogue regarding unknown JUUL health effects over the long haul dominates national conversations between parents and educational and health professionals.
The report states that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared vaping in the teen years one of the country’s newest epidemics. Survey data collected from federal sources reveal that 21 percent of high schoolers have tried e-cigarettes in the past year.
What JUUL’s CEO Has to Say About Teen Vaping
Toward the end of 2017, Kevin Burns moved into the role of CEO with JUUL Labs. Now he finds himself at the peculiar juncture of both unprecedented business success and severe criticism which might threaten the well being of countless teenagers with JUUL health effects which have not been yet established.
Being a parent of a teenager as well, Burns expresses empathy for the mothers and fathers of young people that have become addicted to nicotine through the use of their e-cigarette products. In short, he apologizes for any role the company might have played in attracting youth to vaping.
If Not For Youth, Who Are E-Cigarettes Intended For?
The more recent CNBC article indicates that e-cigarettes are intentionally marketed to adult smokers to give them an alternative method of nicotine delivery without other harmful chemicals and smoke.
Vaping does deliver nicotine in very high amounts leading to addiction, nonetheless. Purportedly, JUUL pods contain five percent nicotine which is higher than previous e-cigarette versions by up to three percent.
The intentional marketing to adult smokers has been questioned as a review has been made of JUUL’s early marketing efforts. The company has come under fire for showing very young models vaping, using bright and flashy colors, and—above all—introducing the product in flavors reminiscent of bubble gum—like Mango, Mixed Fruit, and Crème Brulee.
The teen vaping epidemic will threaten the future success of JUUL without its full cooperation. Kevin Burns is working with the FDA to do just that. The business recently removed all social media platforms to discourage kids from sharing pics of vaping and encouraging each other to use. Flavors have also been removed from nicotine pod offerings.
What Are Schools Doing About the Vaping Epidemic?
Necessity is the mother of invention and schools are, of necessity, having to address the epidemic of e-cigarettes. As part of the solution, technology has arisen which can sense when vaping is occurring. Currently, one of the devices is offered by Soter Technologies.
Soter, according to our 2018 CNBC article, had 1,000 contract proposals for their version and countless backlogged inquiries. A good number of the contracts were from middle and high schools desiring a method of early intervention.
The technology is best utilized with an aggressive education campaign about the dangers of e-cigarette smoking which many have also undertaken.
