Good Morning, All! I hope you had a GREAT week!
I can say it’s SUPER AWESOME to be back in the great United States of America! The jaunt through Europe and the UK was great, and I’ve got a LOT of work to do to make any European project viable, but I see possibilities there.
Some of my friends said to me regarding my message about starting Top Class Actions in Europe: ‘Scott, you gave away your whole idea!’ That’s partially true. I told you a high-level strategy on what to do to make it work. BUT I didn’t tell you the WHOLE truth. The whole truth of implementation is REALLY hard. That’s why I encourage my friends who have great ideas to share them with others. Most people will NEVER chase their entrepreneurial dream. The majority of those who do will fail. That’s the hard truth about entrepreneurship—it’s not easy. It’s a TON of work. And just because you’ve got a great idea and tell your neighbor (or in my case 600,000 friends through our newsletter) it doesn’t mean it will work or that anyone can actually implement it. That’s because starting a business is so hard you have to be truly passionate about your project. You might think it’s a super awesome idea, and your friend may think it’s viable, but that doesn’t mean they can do it without you. You’re the visionary. You’re the one who thought for days, weeks, months or even years about your project. You’re the person who was stirred to action. You knew, deep in your heart, that if you didn’t try, you would always wonder if you could have been the next millionaire, the person on the cover of Entrepreneur, someone who made history . . . . That passion is what will drive you from talking about your brilliant idea, to actually doing it, and then when you hit that first roadblock—which could be from time, money, family telling you you’re an idiot for trying something crazy, or a combination of things—your passion will be what pushes you forward. That sense of, ‘I can’t quit now, I have to see this through!’
When I started Top Class Actions, I had two other ‘partners.’ I was the idea guy, who was going to push forward with the vision of the company, write articles for the website, and keep it moving forward. My two partners were going to be in charge of IT and raising money for the company. Keep in mind—these are two absolute badasses. One could code his way from one single processor server up through thousands of servers linked together, while the other recently had a successful exit from a company he started and is just really, really good at growing start-ups. Both guys thought Top Class Actions was viable and a solid idea.
Well, it came time to put money and time into it: $10,000 each, plus a commitment of 10+ hours per week working on it (it was a side project for everyone involved, including me), both guys dropped out. They couldn’t take the time away from their families and day jobs to make it happen. Plus, I don’t think either one felt comfortable dropping $10,000 on my dream. Hindsight is 20/20 and both guys are still good friends who have been very successful without TCA but wish they had at least popped in the cash to retain some equity.
That’s what happens when you start a business. You’ve got partners, momentum, excitement, energy, and BOOM—you’re all by yourself, unexpectedly. Now what? Do EVERYTHING by yourself? Most companies are successful BECAUSE there are at least two people working together to make it happen. Thankfully, I had a cheerleader in my wife to keep me motivated. She said, ‘Do it! I’ve never seen you so excited about something in your life, and most importantly it’s your first ‘big idea’ you’re actually DOING something about (I had a LOT of them.) Don’t give up! You can do this!’ So I did. With LOTS of bumps along the way and new ones every week, but I keep going. Unafraid to share my idea with friends like you.
More on Europe next week. Make your time here AWESOME!
Here are some other lawsuits and settlements I thought you would be interested in:
That’s it for now! Make it a GREAT week!
Warm Regards,
Scott Hardy
