Donald Trump stands at a podium with his arms outstretched to his sides during a rally - Trump campaign

The Trump campaign has voluntarily dismissed a lawsuit in Michigan challenging the state’s voting procedures, though legal action is ongoing in other battleground states, according to CBS News.

Trump’s re-election campaign mounted its legal challenge earlier this month, calling for a recount of votes in Michigan’s Wayne County. According to the campaign, voter fraud permeated the counting process in the Detroit area and contributed to the current president’s loss in Michigan.

The Trump campaign lawsuit relied in part on affidavits from two Wayne County election officials, Politico reported.

Initially, the officials reportedly voted against certifying the county’s votes based on their concerns about the validity of absentee votes. These Republican officials say they only certified the county’s election results after Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson promised an audit of the absentee voting process.

The two election officials later sent sworn affidavits to Wayne County’s attorney that repudiated their previous votes to certify the county’s votes. Although the two Republicans have filed these affidavits rescinding their approval, the deadline for Wayne County vote certification passed on Nov. 17.

“There is no legal mechanism for them to rescind their vote,” Michigan Secretary of State spokeswoman Tracy Wimmer explained in a statement to CNN. “Their job is done and the next step in the process is for the Board of State Canvassers to meet and certify.”

Now that the county’s results have been certified, the Board of State Canvassers will begin the process to certify the results at the state level. If the state authorities certify the election results as they stand — in favor of President-elect Joe Biden — the Trump campaign’s bid to overturn the recent election results will be hit with another major roadblock.

An "I voted" sticker lies on top of a mail-in ballot for Michigan - Trump campaignAlthough the Trump campaign has dropped its last federal lawsuit in Michigan, the campaign has lawsuits pending in other battleground states.

Many states were closely watched by voters as in-person and absentee ballots were counted in the days following the election. Some states were projected to swing red, but changed to blue as in-person votes and absentee ballots were counted.

News sources such as The New York Times project Joe Biden to win the 2020 presidential election with 306 electoral votes over Trump’s projected 232. In order to win the election, a candidate has to secure 270 electoral votes.

Despite these results, President Trump has not officially conceded and instead has mounted legal challenges.

In Pennsylvania, the Trump campaign filed a lawsuit urging the courts to stop Pennsylvania from certifying the state’s election results. According to the lawsuit, at least seven counties in Pennsylvania saw voter fraud in processing and handling votes.

A similar lawsuit was filed in Arizona, contending Maricopa County officials wrongfully rejected some ballots. The issue reportedly stems from new tabulating machines and the way they handle overvotes — voter mistakes, ink blots or other errors that make it impossible for the machines to count the vote.

Instead of allowing voters to make the choice whether to cast their ballot with the error or redo their votes, voters in Arizona were allegedly deceived into overriding tabulation error messages.
