Du Pont class action settlement

A C-8 Medical Monitoring Program was created as a part of a class action settlement involving claims arising from the contamination of drinking water with a chemical known as ammonium perfluorooctanoate (C-8) that was reportedly released from du Pont de Nemours and Co.’s Washington Works Plant in Wood County, W. Va. If you consumed water from one of the affected water sources, you could be entitled to medical monitoring from the C-8 class action settlement.

Studies indicated a “probable link” between exposure to C-8 and the following Human Diseases: (1) pregnancy-induced hypertension (including preeclampsia), (2) kidney cancer, (3) testicular cancer, (4) thyroid disease, (5) ulcerative colitis, and (6) diagnosed high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia).

The Medical Panel recommends the following medical monitoring for the Human Diseases with a probable link to C-8 exposure:

  • High Cholesterol
  • Thyroid Disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Testicular Cancer
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension
  • Physician Consultation
  • C-8 Blood Testing

UPDATE: On Feb. 13, 2017, DuPont and Chemours agreed to pay $671 million to settle 3,550 lawsuits in Ohio and West Virginia by residents who say they were sickened by drinking water contaminated by perfluorooctanoic acid released from a former DuPont plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia more than a decade ago.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the C-8 class action settlement include anyone who consumed water for at least one year before Dec. 4, 2004 from any of the following sources: Lubeck Public Service District (W. Va.), City of Pelpre (Ohio), Tuppers Plains-Chester Water District (Ohio), Village of Pomeroy (Ohio), Little Hocking Water Association (Ohio), and Mason County Public Service District (W. Va.), or certain private water sources listed here.

In order to be entitled to medical monitoring from the du Pont class action settlement, you must:

  • Be a member of the Class;
  • Not have a prior diagnosis for the Human Disease to be tested; and
  • The test must be something that a physician would not otherwise recommend for you if you had not been exposed to C-8.
Potential Award

Free medical monitoring (the costs will be paid for by du Pont) for the Human Diseases with a probable link to C-8 exposure, including:

  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension (including preeclampsia)
  • Kidney cancer
  • Testicular cancer
  • Thyroid disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Diagnosed high cholesterol
