The United States Department of Justice and the Department of the Navy announced that there are new elective expedited settlement options for those injured by Camp Lejeune tainted water.

The new rule, called the โ€œelective option,โ€ is aimed at allowing veterans to quickly resolve claims based on the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. The Camp Lejeune victims are those who showed health issues after exposure to the contaminated water between mid-1953 and 1987.

To be part of the new process, Camp Lejeune victims must first file a claim and then the review can be expedited. To date, more than 93,000 Camp Lejeune claims have been made.

โ€œThe Elective Option is a critical step in bringing relief to qualifying claimants impacted by the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, who will now have an avenue for receiving quick and early resolution of claims under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act,โ€ Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta said in a statement.ย

Camp Lejeune victims to receive offers based on health issue, time on base and if death was involved

The Camp Lejeune claims will be grouped into tiers, with Tier 1 being those who can show they had kidney cancer, liver cancer, non-Hodgkinโ€™s lymphoma, leukemia and bladder cancer due to the Camp Lejeune tainted water, according to the annoucementย

Tier 1 victims would receive settlement offers of $450,000, $300,000 or $150,000 based on whether they were at the base for more than five years, between one and five years or between 30 and 364 days.

Tier 2 is those who can prove they had multiple myeloma, Parkinsonโ€™s disease, kidney disease (end-stage renal disease) and systemic sclerosis/systemic scleroderma linked to the Camp Lejeune tainted water.

Those victims would receive settlement offers of $400,000, $250,000 or $100,000 based on the same period of days or years on the base. If the health issue resulted in death, the settlement offer will rise $100,000.

A class action lawsuit said that, for decades, the water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune has been tainted with toxic chemicals that are known to cause cancer and other diseases.
