Potential TikTok ban overview:

  • Who: The Biden administration has demanded China-based ByteDance sell TikTok or face a nationwide ban in the US.
  • Why: Federal officials are concerned about the data safety of American users of the popular China-based video hosting platform.
  • Where: TikTok is used by American consumers nationwide.

The Biden administration is threatening to place a nationwide ban on TikTok if the China-based company that owns it doesn’t sell the popular video hosting platform.

It is currently unknown if federal officials have given ByteDance a time frame for selling TikTok, reports NPR

TikTok has reportedly faced the ire of the Biden administration over concerns that the more than 100 million Americans who use the app are putting their data at risk.

The threat of a nationwide ban is the first time the Biden administration has threatened TikTok, however, with the demands likely to face a legal challenge from ByteDance, reports NPR.

The Trump administration previously attempted to put TikTok out of business by placing prohibitions on the company, however the effort was reportedly prevented by a federal judge in Washington.

TikTok has said, in response to the demand, that it is “disappointed in the outcome,” reports NPR.

An American company would reportedly first need to acquire the blessing of Chinese officials — who have been against the idea of selling the company — before any sale would be able to be completed.

CFIUS has spent two years examining TikTok’s data safety efforts

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS), meanwhile, has spent the last two years examining whether the data of American TikTok users is being properly safeguarded, reports NPR.

In response, TikTok has reportedly created a plan called “Project Texas” that the company has pledged to spend $1.5 billion on and that would create a stronger firewall between users and ByteDance employees.

While CFIUS had initially said that it was pleased with the new safeguards TikTok was enacting, the agency has now rejected the company’s proposal and joined the Biden administration in calling for it to be sold, reports NPR.

Last October, Forbes claimed ByteDance had planned to use its Internal Audit and Risk Control department to covertly collect the physical locations of specific American TikTok users, allegedly in order to surveil them.

For the face and reputation of the company I think it would be feasible to sellout and then repurchase under a different name.

no they should not ban tiktok because, they want to ban it for the simple reason of free speech. the fact that 150,000 millions of Americans are coming together the fact that there is so much knowledge on tiktok about so much and so much of it is censorship through other apps if you would just see it with different perspective then people would see its not about some data collection Facebook does that already. but they will ban everything from the internet if they dont see it fit to their agenda they want to silence free speech and free thinking they want to control every aspect of your life. read the restrict bill its diabolical its just the start of many things coming, us conspiracy theorist can see we predicted the xovid shot being bad and look at all the people dying and having heart issues because of it. we get our real news on there mr chu is for us not against us our gov is the one against us because they can’t control the app. look up bill s.686 the restrict act and please read it we can not let this pass orr we will be controlled by everything including your bank account please right you congressman and explain to them not to pass the bill especially if your a small buisness owner they want everyone who’s been working for themselves back into the corporate world. im hoping this small message will reach those and change your heart and the matter and join us in saving our free speech, I cant even post this on Facebook with out it being taken down in 24hrs but I can post this on tiktok and reach millions with information and thats the problem. is knowledge of their corruption and our corrupt government is spreading on tiktok and we are learning to get away from it some way somehow and waking up millions. I knew about the Ohio train derailment as it happened exactly that day and the real unfiltered news, from real people. go on tiktok and search corrupt government. not Google not Facebook, not Instagram but tiktok and let the truth shine through
