Kotex tampons recallKimberly-Clark issued a Kotex tampons recall after receiving reports of the tampons unraveling or coming apart during removal.

U by Kotex is a popular feminine health brand which sells a variety of products including tampons and pads. The brand’s website states: “Everyone is different, especially when it comes to their period. That’s why you can choose from a variety of tampons, pads and liners so nothing can get in the way of your dreams.”

Although the brand is popular, touting sleek packaging in fun colors, a recent recall may diminish the popularity of the Kotex brand.

An apparent defect has prompted the Kotex tampons recall after the manufacturer received reports from consumers that attempted removal of the product was causing unraveling or causing the products to fall apart.

According to the Kotex tampons recall announcement, some consumers required “medical attention to remove tampon pieces left in the body.” Additionally, there have reportedly been a small number of reports of infections, irritation, injury and other issues associated with the unraveling tampons.

The Kotex tampons recall includes U by Kotex Sleek Regular Absorbency tampons manufactured between Oct. 7, 2016 and Oct. 16, 2018, and distributed between Oct. 17, 2016 and Oct. 23, 2018.

full list of affected lot numbers and a lot number checking tool are available from Kimberly-Clark so consumers can check if their products are part of the recall. Consumers can find the lot number on the bottom of product packaging.

U by Kotex Sleek Tampons Super Absorbency and Super Plus Absorbency are not included in the Kotex tampons recall.

Recall Alerts

When consumers come across issues or illnesses caused from consumer goods, their complaints are what start the ball rolling for alerts and recall notifications. In the case of outbreaks of foodborne illnesses like listeria or salmonella, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is usually notified to find the source and lets the public know.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also releases alerts on products that can affect consumer health, like FDA drug recall notices, or the current tampon recall.

The FDA alert regarding the Kotex tampons recall warns consumers to stop using the product immediately. The FDA also says that consumers who used the product and who are experiencing vaginal injury, (pain, bleeding, or discomfort), vaginal irritation (itching or swelling), urogenital infections (bladder or vaginal bacterial and/or yeast infections), hot flashes, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting should seek medical attention.

Additionally, the FDA directed retailers to remove recalled products from their shelves and notify consumers of the affected lot numbers. The products involved in the Kotex tampons recall were sold both in the U.S. and in Canada.

The FDA’s alert instructs U.S. physicians and health professionals to submit adverse reactions or problems to MedWatch, the FDA’s Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program, by submitting a report online or via fax. Canadian health care professionals can report incidents related to the Kotex tampons recall to Health Canada by completing the agency’s complaint form online.

Consumers who need additional assistance can contact Kimberly-Clark’s Customer Service team to discuss the Kotex tampons recall. Kimberly-Clark is a personal care company which produces a variety of paper-based products under household brands including Kleenex facial tissue, Cottonelle toilet paper, Huggies baby products, and more.
