Frontier Airlines misleads consumers into believing they are purchasing lower-priced airfare than they actually are and isn’t upfront about its bag fees, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Amira Hamad claims Frontier “makes up whatever discount it purports” by hitting its customers with “fraudulent and unwarranted charges” related to fees for personal items and checked and carry-on bags.

“FRONTIER’s bait-and-switch and ‘gotcha’ tactics are designed to confuse, trick, and trap consumers to the public’s detriment,” the Frontier class action states.

Hamad wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers.

Frontier intentionally hides bag fees, other charges from consumers, class action says

Hamad argues Frontier “does not make its fee structure clear” to its customers at the time they purchase tickets, and that it is even more unclear when a purchase is made with a third-party vendor.

Further, Frontier is accused of intentionally hiding fees from consumers as a way to “fraudulently induce sales.”

“FRONTIER’s fees are not conspicuously shown on its website or on the websites of third-party vendors, and consumers are often unaware of FRONTIER’s large and plentiful fees until after they purchase a ticket that initially appeared attractive,” the Frontier class action states.

Hamad claims Frontier is guilty of breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation, under Florida common law, and of violating the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and Florida laws regarding misleading advertising.

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory relief along with an award of actual and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

In another case involving a company called Frontier, a class action lawsuit was filed against Frontier Communications in 2020 by a consumer arguing the cable company charges more than what its customers agreed to pay for its services.

  1. Deidra Keyes says:

I just purchased a one way ticket and it was a decent prize until I paid and noticed how much it cost just for your bags smh if you have more than one you will be paying almost the same price from a different air line with a free bag.

  2. Amanda Greene says:

How do we join the lawsuit ??? They straight robbed me at the gate and charged me over $1,000 for bags and my flight wasn’t even but 440$ for 4 ppl . We had no other choice but to pay or we were gonna miss our flight. I filed a complaint and never heard a thing back. There website a them gate keepers charge a total different price . I heard employees get 10$20$ extra for over charging per bag. They are straight crooks . How do I join the lawsuit?

I’ve been flying frontier airlines for several years now from Las Vegas Nevada to Michigan, I would say I fly here once a month, lon personal business to visit my mom.

    1. Tina Lawson says:

Frontier sucks. There is no consistencies among their employees from airport to airport regarding bag fees. I flew out of LV with my bag that met their standards but when I flew out of Ontario with the same bad, they claimed it didn’t meet their regulations. They made me put in the sizing slot, it fit, but still made me pay 100.00. I was pissed because whenever I fly them I have an issue.

  4. Demetrius Lawson says:

I have used Frontier a few time a couple years ago and so happen need to use them this weekend for a last minute trip with my mom. The only reason I’m flying with them is because of a last minute trip. Yes I think the checked bag fee is high being that it has to be 40lb and charging for carry on I’m not happy with so my mom and I have to share 1 checked bag and 1 carry on. In my opinion yes they do make up for prices with the bags and all but I have now choice this time around.

  5. Dave Schumacher says:

Most all airlines excepting Southwest charge bag fees. Frontier makes it very clear and even states that you save by paying at time of booking.

    1. Meghan Woodhouse says:

On the last flight I took with Frontier, I placed my backpack fully in the metal box with nothing sticking out. That was after they told me that everything I had needed to go in the bag before I could measure it, including my phone, my tablet, and my FULL travel mug of coffee. These were things that would not be in my bag when I stowed it. I was told it didn’t fit and I would have to pay an additional fee. I asked why, pointed at my backpack fully in the box and then took a picture of it. I was told that I was going to be kicked off of the flight if I didn’t pay. As i stood there dumbfounded (not raising my voice or being combative because they had already threatened to kick me off of the flight at the very first question that I asked) but asking for someone to explain to me why my backpack “didn’t fit” and was there another authority that I could speak to, the woman behind the counter got really nasty and told me that I had to do what I was told and that the woman who denied me was the only authority. At this point I started crying. I had four woman in green shirts surround me. When I asked why is this woman yelling at me they looked at each other and said, do you hear yelling; I don’t hear yelling…”

On board the airplane a Steward explained that they are a company contracted by Frontier to handle the gate and that they are payed a commission for every fee that they force out of people. I did not have an extra $100 to pay for that bag. Being told to throw away my belongings, pay the $100 or be denied my flight was traumatic. Being ganged up on by the Menzies Aviation employees was terrifying. Then to get on board and be told by the Steward that this is a regular practice to get a commission check was deeply upsetting, and I’m not sure I can ever fly Frontier again. This was all over a backpack that had been my personal item on a hundred Frontier flights over the span of 15 years with no problems. I only use that backpack for flying BECAUSE I know it fits. Also, on the flight home I had zero problems using that bag as my personal item with more stuff in it than I left with. So, no, they do not clearly state anything and the process is completely subjective.

    2. Clint says:

No It’s not in my opion.. You probably paid a $25 fee to book using the internet and still don’t even know it. That’s how good they are at hiding fees. In my experience after paying all the additional fees I could flown a non discount airline for the same price.

      1. Kris says:

They literally break down all the fees on the app and website, and they’re in the confirmation email. All you need to do is read.

        1. Sar says:

Doesn’t take away the fact they are a piss poor airline in every way

        2. Roger Mahon says:

100% correct! Reading these complaints, it’s clear that people are just unhappy that they get to the airport and are then shocked and surprised that they have to pay fees for their checked bags and carry on, fees that were clearly disclosed as they booked their tickets on the website! Not sure why people are so shocked at this!

  6. Gary says:

I have flown frontier over the last number of years. What I don’t understand is how some people don’t read everything before they make a purchase they repeatedly ask you do you want to add services before you actually pay. If people want to get out of paying for the checked baggage what they need to do is send it to their hotel or a friend or somebody where they’re traveling through UPS it’s a lot cheaper. What I found out is if I’m staying at the same hotel and coming back in 2 or 3 months the hotel will keep your bag for free till your next visit which is what I do sometimes also if you’re good and kind and friendly at the checkout counter if you need to upgrade to an exit row seat most of the time I’ve been lucky to have it. My bag fits under the seat so I don’t usually bring any other luggage with me. This lawsuit is just another frivolous attempt to get money make a name for themselves.

    1. Roger Mahon says:

Exactly, another frivolous lawsuit trying to get class action status for a payday for the poor plaintiff who clearly didn’t read the clearly laid out fees when booking! And a nice payday for the plaintiff and their attorneys if they win this!

  7. Kathy Gisele Smith-Cancela says:

I love Frontier!! I use the app and the charges are perfectly clear. Being a Discount Den member helps too! It sure beats driving and the staff is always nice to me. Now, Spirit – well that’s a different story!

    1. Roger Mahon says:

Agreed and if you have their credit card and get even their lowest tier Elite status just by meeting spend thresholds, you also get a free checked bag and free stretch seating when checking in. Of people read the rules and follow them, Frontier is an amazing bargain!

  8. Judy says:

I paid for my dog and when I boarded the plane I was told I needed to check my suitcase as it was a 3rd item. I complained and they didn’t charge me to check my bag after I was going to sit down.

  9. Kathy Gisele Smith-Cancela says:

  10. WILLIAM SIKINGER says:

Same thing just happened to us. Scumbag company. Customer service is non-existent.
