Frontier Airlines misleads consumers into believing they are purchasing lower-priced airfare than they actually are and isn’t upfront about its bag fees, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Amira Hamad claims Frontier “makes up whatever discount it purports” by hitting its customers with “fraudulent and unwarranted charges” related to fees for personal items and checked and carry-on bags.

“FRONTIER’s bait-and-switch and ‘gotcha’ tactics are designed to confuse, trick, and trap consumers to the public’s detriment,” the Frontier class action states.

Hamad wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers.

Frontier intentionally hides bag fees, other charges from consumers, class action says

Hamad argues Frontier “does not make its fee structure clear” to its customers at the time they purchase tickets, and that it is even more unclear when a purchase is made with a third-party vendor.

Further, Frontier is accused of intentionally hiding fees from consumers as a way to “fraudulently induce sales.”

“FRONTIER’s fees are not conspicuously shown on its website or on the websites of third-party vendors, and consumers are often unaware of FRONTIER’s large and plentiful fees until after they purchase a ticket that initially appeared attractive,” the Frontier class action states.

Hamad claims Frontier is guilty of breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation, under Florida common law, and of violating the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and Florida laws regarding misleading advertising.

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory relief along with an award of actual and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

In another case involving a company called Frontier, a class action lawsuit was filed against Frontier Communications in 2020 by a consumer arguing the cable company charges more than what its customers agreed to pay for its services.

  1. Kendra says:

I have flown Frontier several times and what everyone is saying is accurate. Frontier definitely uses the bait and switch tactics. They have been false advertising their prices for a very long time and it’s definitely time to do something about this airline. I purchased their all you can fly Go Wild pass back in November on Black Friday because there was a $599.00 sale going on for this pass that started in May of 2023. I have yet been able to use it or fly anywhere because every time I try to book a flight, their Go Wild Pass option is not available. So either I have to pay for a ticket or just find another flight. Frontier is ridiculous and a rip off.

I did the same for the flyallypuwant summer wild pass. No flights available but there are plenty to purchase. An illegal scam.

I flew Frontier, I believe for the first time, in July 2022, and I was unaware that they have all these hidden and inconsistent charges. I checked one bag at the airport on my flight out, and I was verbally told the fee cost $55- great. I wasn’t offered a receipt or anything, which in my experience, is pretty normal at the airport. On my return flight, I checked the exact same bag with the exact same contents on my return flight and was charged $55- cool, that tracks. However, I checked my card statement when I got home, and they actually charged me $129 for the bag on the flight out and $79 for the bag on the return flight. I called to argue the discrepancy between what I was told, what I found online, and what I was charged, but I was told that because I didn’t have a receipt with the weight for the flights, which again I wasn’t offered, there was nothing to be done. It was extremely frustrating, especially because I made sure the bag was under 40lbs and was not prepared to pay over $200 to check a freaking bag. I could have gotten a flight with another airline to keep costs down if they’d been upfront about the hidden fees.

    1. Barb Aruffo says:

Frontier baits their potential customers with low rates that turn out to be a full fee airline ticket once you add on things like a seat. Who purchases an airline ticket assuming they don’t have a seat on the plane? The personal bag situation is out of control at frontier. They have an extreme push to charge people an extra $100 before boarding their flight based on their luggage criteria not meeting the size limits? I bought my bag according to their size limits and all of the sudden it doesn’t meet their standards even though the bag still fully fits under the seat? I’ve had to pay them $100 before boarding a plane twice now in the last six months. It’s a disgrace !

      1. Terrel says:

They did me the same way but they also charged me 25 dollars because I didn’t check in 2hours before boarding. Charged me 92 dollars for a carry on. Last week Thursday in Philadelphia they closed the door in my face along with 12 other passengers stating they didn’t want the flight to be late.. the gate attendant and the supervisor were rude and caught in all kinds of lies. The 12-15 passengers were on line waiting to get on but was refused because tammy the gate agent was under pressure it was a full flight. We we supposed to start boarding at 646am but didn’t start boarding until 705am and the doors close at 725am. Then i had to buy another ticket for 99 dollars to get home.. the worst airline ever. 7-6-23 was there birthday and look how they treat their customers. The gate agents rdu and Philadelphia are rude disrespectful arrogant. I filled a complaint but no response go figure

  4. Gwendolyn McKinney says:

I flew frontier a couple of weeks ago the lies about the baggage there’s no gate agents I miss my flight because they didn’t have people to fly the plane they kept saying it was weather but other flights were flying in and out I also understand this baggage issue is a common thing you got to pay for bags you got to pay for seats you got to pay for water you got to pay for toilet paper and the lack of insensitivity to the issue I miss my transportation connection it was horrible just horrible for a flight that started out at $80 ended up being almost $400 that’s insane. And I got covered from being in that airport for hours and hours and hours which I am currently in bed with and I can’t work.

  5. Marti says:

I flew Frontier June 28 and July 3. I purchased tickets on the web site, where it plainly states sizes of bags allowed to carry on and prices for the particular flight. I oped got a personal bag no charge and bought clothes on arrival in Denver. A couple of changes were less than paying for a carry-on both ways. My daughter will send the lot by post. The tickets round trip were under $200 and a carry-on round trip was over $100.

  6. Nancy Watson says:

I have flown frontier many many times over the years and this is most certainly frustrating. Please add me to the class action

  7. yancy t anderson says:

I don’t know if I should join this one or start another. I bought the wild pass for 700 dollars not counting black out dates I have attempted to fly well over a hundred times but have only been able to book 4 flights. I could understand if the flight was booked but 90% of the time there are open seats it doesn’t make sense.

  8. Crystal says:

I’ve purchased plenty of frontier tickets in the las 6 months

  9. Jacqueline says:

Same happened to me on June 19th when I went to the counter to ask a question because it was my first time flying with them. The girl asked to see my ID and said the app was closed for check in and I had to do it there. I had to pay $104 for my carry on and then realized she had added priority boarding and there was a fee for her service as well. Total rip off indeed!!

  10. Simone Hill says:

I’ve travelled Frontier Airlines at least twice a year for the past 4 years. It’s not fair to us that they’re charging these hidden fees.
