Man fed up with telemarketer calls screams at phone. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act is a law designed to protect people from unwanted spam calls, texts, and faxes. Despite legal limitations, businesses find curative ways to evade the law and reach customers.

Customers may be bombarded with numerous calls each day, so figuring out how to stop robocalls/telemarketer calls is important to many people.

What is a Telemarketer Call?

A telemarketer call is a call in which a business or individual selling something attempts to solicit business by calling consumers for the purpose of advertising a good or service.

Are Robocalls Different Than Telemarketer Calls?

In some cases, telemarketers may use an automatic dialing machine and a prerecorded message to contact many people at once. In these instances, the telemarketer call is known as a robocall.

Are Telemarketer Calls Illegal?

There are some legal restrictions on telemarketer calls. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) prohibits businesses and individuals from making telemarketing calls to anyone who has not given explicit consent to receive the messages.

Additionally, in a further attempt to curb the vast number of telemarketer calls, the TCPA prohibits businesses and individuals from using an automatic dialing machine and prerecorded message.

How Can I Stop Robocalls/Telemarketer Calls?

Though telemarketer calls are largely illegal, businesses still find ways to make them. There are a few things that can be done to curb or avoid telemarketer calls altogether.

Join the National Do Not Call Registry — the TCPA prohibits businesses from calling numbers on Do Not Call lists. Registering your number is a fairly simple process, and can give you some peace of mind.

The National Do Not Call Registry allowS you to register your phone and report unwanted calls.

If you get persistent calls from one caller, you can block an individual number. This won’t stop robocalls entirely, especially since one caller can use multiple numbers, but it can help. Digital Trends notes that you can block a number through your phone or carrier.

Additionally, not answering a robocall is important, because the more you answer, the more you will receive. By picking up a robocall, you are effectively telling a telemarketer that your number is valid and should be called again.

How Can I Avoid Answering Telemarketer Calls?

A good clue to recognize a telemarketer is a call coming from an unknown number. Often, robocalls call people around the country, so the call you get may come from out of state.

However, some telemarketers send calls from a number of the same area code to encourage people to pick up, thinking that the call may be from someone they know.

People should feel free to ignore any call from an unknown number.  There are many ways to reach someone, so if a familiar contact calls you and you don’t pick up, they will likely leave a voicemail, text, send an email, or reach out in another way that lets you verify their identity.

If you were contacted on your cell phone by a company via an unsolicited text message (text spam) or prerecorded voice message (robocall), you may be eligible for compensation under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

I get more telemarketer calls than normal phone calls even though I have joined the DO NOT CALL REGISTRY. It’s slowed down a little since then; very little.
