A $6 million Planned Parenthood LA, or PPLA, settlement resolves claims that PPLA failed to protect its clients from a 2021 data breach that compromised more than 400,000 patients’ information.

The PPLA settlement benefits individuals who received a data breach notification from Planned Parenthood Los Angeles in November 2021 informing them that their information may have been compromised in a data breach in October 2021.

The Planned Parenthood LA data breach allegedly compromised 409,437 patients’ names, insurance information and other sensitive data. According to the class action lawsuit, PPLA could have prevented the data breach by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures to protect patient information.

Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is a network of 24 health centers that provide comprehensive reproductive health care services to Los Angeles County.

PPLA hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $6 million Planned Parenthood settlement to resolve the class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the PPLA settlement, class members can receive up to $210 for seven hours of lost time compensated at a rate of $30 per hour. Class members can also claim up to $10,000 for data breach-related expenses such as bank fees, fraudulent charges, credit expenses, identity theft damages and more.

Class members in the Planned Parenthood settlement can also receive a payment for statutory damages. These payments will vary depending on participation rates. According to the settlement website, claimants will receive an estimated $66.35 with a 10% participation rate or up to $359.23 with a 2% participation rate before fraud/out-of-pocket costs payments and documented time payments are deducted.

The Planned Parenthood settlement also offers three years of credit monitoring and identity-theft insurance services provided by TransUnion. These services include TransUnion credit report monitoring, instant alerts and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is June 6, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the Planned Parenthood settlement is scheduled for Aug. 8, 2024.

In order to receive benefits under the PPLA settlement, class members must submit a valid claim form by July 6, 2024.
